Good for a wall print

250 DPI is indistinguishable from 300 at normal wall viewing distance. Only a print someone will examine at arm's length would benefit from more.

What DPI actually means here

Dots per inch is not a property of a file. A photograph has a fixed number of pixels; DPI only exists once you decide how many inches to spread them across. The same 6000 × 4000 file is 500 DPI at 12 × 8 inches and 167 DPI at 36 × 24. Nothing about the file changed.

So the useful question is never "what DPI is my image" but "what DPI will it be at the size I want". That is what this calculator answers.

The 300 DPI figure is genuinely conservative for wall art. It comes from commercial offset printing of material designed to be read at arm's length, and applying it to a 24 × 36 poster demands a 54 megapixel file for no visible benefit.

Upscaling

Every image editor will happily resample a small file up to any dimensions you ask for, and modern machine-learning upscalers do a genuinely better job than the old bicubic methods at inventing plausible edges. Neither recovers detail that the sensor never recorded.

The honest use of upscaling is to smooth the transition when a file is slightly short of the target — say 170 DPI where you wanted 200. Using it to turn a 2 megapixel image into a 24 × 36 poster produces exactly what you would expect.

Shape comes before resolution

Before worrying about sharpness, check that the file and the print are the same shape. Most cameras produce 3:2 images and the two most stocked US frame sizes — 8x10 and 16x20 — are 4:5, so filling one costs about 17% of the long edge. Frequently asked questions

What DPI do I need to print a photo?

300 DPI is the photographic standard for anything held in the hand or examined closely. For a print that will hang on a wall and be viewed from four feet or more, 200 DPI is indistinguishable from 300, and 150 DPI is acceptable for large posters.

How many pixels do I need for a 16x20 print?

4800 x 6000 pixels for a true 300 DPI print, which is 28.8 megapixels — more than most cameras produce. At 200 DPI, which is perfectly good on a wall, you need 3200 x 4000 pixels, or 12.8 megapixels.

What is DPI versus PPI?

PPI (pixels per inch) describes a digital image; DPI (dots per inch) describes what a printer lays down. In everyday use they are used interchangeably for print sizing, and that is how this calculator uses DPI — pixels of image data per inch of paper.

Can I increase the DPI of an image?

Not meaningfully. Software can invent pixels to make a file the right dimensions, but it cannot add detail that was never captured. An upscaled image prints exactly as soft as the original was, regardless of what the file's dimensions claim.

Why does viewing distance change the DPI I need?

Because the eye resolves a fixed angle, not a fixed number of dots. A billboard is printed at under 20 DPI and looks sharp from across a street. A print viewed from six feet needs roughly half the resolution of one viewed from arm's length.

What is the largest print I can make from a phone photo?

A 12-megapixel phone photo is about 4000 x 3000 pixels, which gives a good 20 x 15 inch print at 200 DPI or a 13 x 10 inch print at 300. Newer phones shooting 48 megapixels comfortably reach 24 x 36 at wall quality.

Does cropping reduce print quality?

Yes, directly. Cropping discards pixels, so a 24-megapixel file cropped to a third of its area is an 8-megapixel file. Always check the resolution of the cropped version rather than the camera's headline figure.

Why does the calculator warn about shape mismatch?

Because a file and a print size can have different aspect ratios, in which case the lab has to crop the long edge or add borders. The calculator reports roughly how much would be trimmed and lists frame sizes that match your file's shape exactly.
