What the calculator is actually doing

An aspect ratio is a shape, not a size. It is the width of an image divided by its height, reduced to the smallest whole numbers that describe the same proportion. A 6000 × 4000 pixel camera file, a 6 × 4 inch print and a 30 × 20 inch poster are all 3:2. They are wildly different sizes and identical shapes, and any of them will fill any of the others perfectly.

That is the whole reason this tool exists. Frame shopping goes wrong when people match on size and ignore shape. You buy an 8 × 10 frame for a photo straight out of a camera, and the lab quietly trims a full inch off each end of the long edge to make a 3:2 file behave like a 4:5 one. Usually that inch contains somebody's elbow. Occasionally it contains their head.

The simplified ratio

Enter any two dimensions and the calculator reduces them to the simplest whole-number pair that describes the same shape. 1920 × 1080 becomes 16:9. 8.5 × 11 becomes 17:22, which is a useful thing to know: US Letter is not a clean ratio, and that is exactly why letter-size documents look awkward in frames designed around 8 × 10.

The decimal ratio

Some shapes never reduce neatly. A-series paper is √2:1 — approximately 1.414:1 — and no pair of small whole numbers describes it. When the simplified form would be unreadable, the calculator falls back to a decimal, which is still the number you want when you are comparing two shapes to see how close they are.

The metric conversion

One inch is exactly 2.54 cm. That constant hides a genuine trap: an 8 × 10 inch frame is 20.32 × 25.4 cm, and the 20 × 25 cm frames sold across Europe are very slightly smaller. Close enough to look identical in a listing, not close enough for the print to sit flat.

Pixels needed at 300 DPI

300 dots per inch is the standard for photographic printing, so a 16 × 20 print wants 4800 × 6000 pixels — 28.8 megapixels. Before you enlarge anything, check that figure against what your file actually contains. Large posters viewed from across a room hold up fine at 150 DPI; a print someone will stand two feet from does not.

When the shapes do not match

Sooner or later you will have a 3:2 photo and a 4:5 frame, and you have three honest options. Crop the image and accept the loss — decide yourself where the trim falls rather than letting a print lab decide. Add a mat with an opening cut to the image's own ratio, which is the framer's answer and almost always looks better than a full-bleed print anyway. Or order a custom frame, which costs three to five times a standard size and is worth it perhaps once a year.

There is a fourth option people try and regret: printing with white borders and hiding them under the frame's rabbet. The rabbet only covers about an eighth of an inch, the borders are never perfectly even, and the result sits crooked in a way you cannot un-see.

What is an aspect ratio?

An aspect ratio is the relationship between an image's width and its height, written as two numbers separated by a colon. A 3:2 image is one and a half times as wide as it is tall. The ratio describes shape only — a 6x4 inch print and a 30x20 inch poster are both 3:2, so the same file fills either one without cropping.

How do I calculate the aspect ratio of a photo?

Divide the width by the height, then reduce the two numbers by their greatest common divisor. A 6000 x 4000 pixel file divides down to 3:2. The calculator on this page does the reduction for you: enter the pixel or inch dimensions in the width and height fields and read the simplified ratio.

What aspect ratio is an 8x10 frame?

8x10 is 4:5 (or 5:4 in landscape). That is not the shape most cameras produce, which is why an uncropped 3:2 camera photo always loses about a fifth of its long edge in an 8x10 frame. If you want the whole frame filled with no cropping, an 8x12 frame is the 3:2 equivalent.

Which frame sizes have the same aspect ratio?

The 3:2 family is 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30 and 24x36. The 4:5 family is 8x10, 16x20 and 24x30. The 3:4 family is 9x12, 12x16 and 18x24. Within a family you can scale a print up or down freely and it will always fit edge to edge.

Why does my photo get cropped when I print it?

Because the print size you chose has a different aspect ratio from the file. The lab has to either trim the long edge, add white borders, or stretch the image — and almost all of them silently trim. Check the ratio before ordering, or ask for a border, which is what a mat does anyway.

How many pixels do I need for a given print size?

Multiply each dimension in inches by 300 for a photographic-quality print. A 16x20 print needs 4800 x 6000 pixels, or 28.8 megapixels. The calculator shows this figure for whatever size you enter. At normal viewing distance a large poster can drop to 150 DPI without looking soft.

How do I convert a frame size from inches to centimetres?

Multiply inches by 2.54. An 8x10 frame is 20.32 x 25.4 cm, which is why it is not interchangeable with the 20x25 cm frames sold in Europe. Switch the calculator to centimetres and it converts both dimensions and keeps the ratio locked.

What is the aspect ratio of A4 and A3 paper?

Every A-series size is √2:1, roughly 1.414:1. That is what lets you fold an A3 sheet in half and get exactly two A4 sheets. No US frame size shares that ratio, so A-size art in an American frame always needs a mat or a custom cut.

Does the calculator work for video and screen sizes?
