The best wood for picture frames
Poplar, oak, maple, walnut, ash and pine ranked for stability, finish and cost — plus the woods that warp and ruin a mitre.

Wood choice for a picture frame is three separate questions wearing one coat: how it machines, how it finishes, and how much it moves. Species that excel at one often fail at another, which is why professional moulding stock is dominated by timbers nobody outside the trade has heard of.
What a frame actually asks of wood
Stability. Wood expands and contracts across the grain with humidity. A mitred corner joins end grain to end grain, which is the weakest glue joint in woodworking, and it is loaded directly by that movement. Species that move a lot open their corners first.
Clean machining. A frame is 45-degree cuts and a rabbet. Wood that tears out at the cut, or burns under a blade, produces mitres that never close properly.
Finish behaviour. Some woods take stain evenly. Some blotch. Some have grain so open that paint sinks into it and needs filling.
Dent resistance. Frames get handled, stacked and knocked. Soft woods record every one of those events.
The species, ranked by job
For painted frames: poplar
Poplar is the professional default for painted work and deserves it. It is cheap, widely available, dimensionally stable, has fine even grain with no open pores, and takes paint with almost no preparation. It cuts and routs cleanly without burning.
Its weaknesses are cosmetic. Raw poplar is pale with green and grey streaks that look unattractive, and it stains unevenly. Neither matters under paint.
For stained frames: ash and red oak
Both are hard, strong, widely available and have pronounced grain that stain emphasises rather than muddies. Ash is slightly lighter in tone and has a straighter, more even grain pattern; red oak has a stronger cathedral figure and very open pores that a grain filler will smooth if you want a glass-flat finish.
Both machine well with a sharp blade and hold a crisp rabbet. Both are considerably harder on tooling than poplar.
For a fine finish: maple and cherry
Hard maple is dense, close-grained, dent-resistant and extremely stable. It takes a clear finish beautifully. It blotches badly under stain unless you use a conditioner first, and it is hard enough that dull tooling will burn it.
Cherry needs no stain at all — it darkens to a deep reddish brown on its own over a few years — and machines like a dream. It is expensive, and the colour change means a cherry frame will not match a cherry frame made three years later.
For the wood as the feature: walnut
American black walnut is the best-looking common framing timber and the one to use when the moulding is meant to be noticed. It is stable, machines cleanly, and needs nothing beyond an oil finish. It is also two to four times the price of oak, which is why it tends to appear as narrow profiles.
For rustic and utility: pine
Pine is cheap, light, soft and everywhere. Its problem is the huge density difference between its soft early wood and hard latewood: it dents from a fingernail, stains blotchily, and tears out at the mitre unless the blade is sharp.
For painted shop fittings, temporary frames and deliberately rustic work it is entirely reasonable. For a frame with a fine finish it is a false economy — the labour is the same as for poplar and the result is worse.
The trade timbers: obeche, ayous, ramin
Commercial moulding is largely made from tropical hardwoods most people never see as boards: obeche, ayous, ramin, jelutong. They are chosen for exactly the qualities framing needs — very straight grain, uniform density, excellent stability, clean machining, low weight — and they are almost always painted, gilded or wrapped rather than left visible.
If you are buying ready-made moulding by the foot rather than milling your own, this is most likely what you are getting.
Woods to avoid
Beech is hard and machines well but moves more with humidity than almost any other common hardwood. Mitres in beech open.
Unseasoned anything. Wood bought at 15% moisture content and worked immediately will shrink after assembly and open every corner. Let stock acclimatise in the room where the frame will live for at least a week.
Highly figured stock — burl, crotch, heavy curl — looks spectacular and is unstable and prone to tear-out at exactly the 45-degree cut a frame needs. Save it for panels.
Plywood edge-on. The layers show at the mitre and no finish disguises them.
MDF and the engineered options
MDF deserves a fairer hearing than it usually gets. It has no grain, so nothing telegraphs through paint; it is dimensionally stable in all directions; it machines to a razor-sharp profile; and it takes a sprayed finish better than any solid timber. A great many high-quality painted mouldings are MDF, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Its limits are real: it cannot be stained, it is heavy for its strength, its edges are fragile until sealed, and it swells irreversibly if it gets wet. It also holds a screw poorly, so hanging hardware needs to be positioned carefully.
Grain direction and stock selection
Two details that matter more than species.
Quartersawn is more stable than flatsawn. Quartersawn boards — those where the growth rings run roughly perpendicular to the face — move about half as much across their width as flatsawn ones. For frame stock this directly translates into corners that stay closed. Quartersawn oak and ash are widely available and worth seeking out.
Cut the whole frame from one board. Two rails from one board and two from another will move at different rates and finish to slightly different colours. Buy a single length long enough for all four sides plus waste, and mark the order of the cuts.
Sizing the stock
Before the rabbet is cut, a working guide:

The rabbet takes roughly 3/8 inch of depth and 3/8 inch of width out of the back corner, which needs to be deep enough to hold glazing, mat, artwork and backing — about a quarter of an inch of contents at minimum, and half an inch if you are matting generously.
