# Standard picture frame sizes explained

Frame sizes look like a simple list until you try to buy one. The number on the box describes the artwork, not the frame; the same size can mean two different products depending on whether a mat is included; and roughly a third of the sizes the framing trade considers standard never appear on a shop shelf. This guide is the full list, with the distinctions that matter.

## What a frame size actually measures

A frame size is the size of the **artwork opening** — the image the frame is built to display. An 8x10 frame takes an 8x10 print.

Two other dimensions are hiding behind that number, and both catch people out.

The **rabbet** is the L-shaped recess at the back of the moulding that the glass, artwork and backing sit in. It is cut slightly larger than the nominal size, typically by an eighth of an inch in each direction, so the contents drop in without binding. That small allowance is why a print cut exactly to 8x10 can shift a hair inside the frame, and why matting exists.

The **outside dimension** is the nominal size plus twice the face width of the moulding. A narrow half-inch moulding turns an 8x10 into roughly 9x11 on the wall. A wide two-inch gallery moulding turns the same 8x10 into 12x14 — half again as large in visual footprint. When you are planning spacing on a wall, the outside dimension is the only number that matters, and it is the one no listing gives you.

4x6 and 5x7 do almost all the work in this range. The rest are genuinely useful and genuinely harder to find.

## The sizes shops actually stock

There is a hard line between "standard in the trade" and "on the shelf at a general store". Every size in the tables above is standard. These are the ones you can reliably walk in and buy:

4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 8.5x11, 11x14, 16x20, 18x24, 20x30, 24x36.

Everything else — 9x12, 12x16, 12x18, 16x24, 20x24, 22x28, 24x30 — exists, is genuinely standard, and will usually need an art supply shop, a framing shop or an online order. They are not custom sizes and should not be priced as custom. If someone quotes you a custom price for a 12x16, go elsewhere.

## Why the sizes are what they are

The list is not arbitrary. It is the fossil record of three separate industries.

**Photography** gave us the 3:2 sizes — 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36 — because 35mm film exposed a frame 36mm wide by 24mm tall, and digital sensors inherited the proportion.

**Portrait studios and large-format sheet film** gave us the 4:5 sizes: 8x10, 16x20, 24x30. Sheet film came in 4x5 and 8x10 inches, and the print sizes followed.

**Paper and printing** gave us 8.5x11, 11x17 and 22x28, which are US paper sizes and their doublings, and the A-series sizes used almost everywhere else.

This is why frame sizes are not a coherent system. They are three systems in a trenchcoat, which is exactly why a photo from your camera does not fit an 8x10 frame — the two came from different industries and were never designed to meet.

## Matting changes the size you buy

A mat is a stiff paper border between the artwork and the frame. It does three jobs: it holds the artwork off the glass so moisture cannot bond them together, it gives the eye somewhere to rest before the artwork begins, and it lets one frame size display several print sizes.

The convention is that the mat opening is cut about a quarter of an inch smaller than the artwork on each side, so the print is overlapped and held rather than dropping through. A mat described as "8x10 opening" therefore has a physical hole around 7.5 x 9.5 inches.

The common ready-made pairings:

- 8x10 frame, mat opening for 5x7
- 11x14 frame, mat opening for 8x10
- 12x16 frame, mat opening for 9x12
- 16x20 frame, mat opening for 11x14
- 18x24 frame, mat opening for 12x18
- 20x24 frame, mat opening for 16x20
- 24x36 frame, mat opening for 20x30

Notice that each pairing adds two to three inches per side. That is not a rule handed down from anywhere; it is simply the border width that stops looking like a mistake and starts looking like a decision.

## Choosing a size in practice

Work in this order and you will not waste money.

1. **Measure the artwork.** Not the size it was sold as — the actual sheet, with a ruler, in both directions.
2. **Decide whether it gets a mat.** Paper artwork almost always should. Canvas almost never does.
3. **Pick the frame size from that decision.** No mat means the frame size equals the artwork size. A mat means the frame size is the artwork size plus four to six inches total in each direction.
4. **Check the outside dimension** against the wall space you actually have.
5. **Only then** think about finish, glazing and hanging hardware.

This is the lookup page: start from the size you have and read across to the frame you need. Every measurement is given in inches and centimetres, with the matted option alongside the unmatted one, because those are two different frame purchases and confusing them is the single most common framing mistake.

## How to read the chart

Three columns matter.

**Artwork size** is what you physically have — measure it, do not trust the label.

**Frame, no mat** is the frame you buy if the artwork should fill the opening completely. This number always equals the artwork size.

**Frame with mat** is the frame you buy if the artwork should sit inside a border. It is larger, and the mat that goes with it will be described by the artwork size, not by the frame size. A mat sold as "16x20 with an 11x14 opening" goes in a 16x20 frame and displays an 11x14 print.

The matted column follows a simple rule: add four inches to each dimension for a standard border, or six for a generous one. Everything in that column is a size you can buy ready-made.

"Loose" here means the paper rattles inside the rabbet and can shift visibly. It is fixable with a mat, and it is not fixable by hoping.

## Sizes grouped by ratio

If you scale within a ratio family, an image fits every size in the family with no cropping. This is the most useful way to think about frame sizes once you have understood the basic chart.

Note what is missing from the 3:2 row: 8x10 and 16x20. Those are 5:4. A photograph straight from a camera is 3:2, which is why it never quite fits the two most commonly stocked frame sizes in the United States. ## Mat opening reference

Ready-made mats are cut with an overlap so the artwork cannot fall through — normally a quarter of an inch on each side. The opening you see is therefore slightly smaller than the artwork it holds.

## Outside dimensions for wall planning

The frame size is not the wall space. Add twice the moulding width in each direction:

For a gallery wall, add another two to three inches of gap between frames on top of these numbers. That is why a "nine frame grid of 11x14s" needs roughly five feet of wall, not four.

## Printing a copy

This chart is deliberately plain so it prints legibly on a single sheet. Print the page, fold it into a tape measure case, and you will never again buy the wrong frame because you were guessing in an aisle. ## Weights, for planning wall fixings

Assembled weights with a wooden moulding and a mat, which is what determines the hook you need:

## Pixels needed by print size

At 300 DPI for close viewing, and 200 DPI for anything hung on a wall:

Use the 200 DPI column for anything that will hang on a wall and be viewed from more than about four feet. Use 300 for prints held in the hand or examined closely.

# The 11x14 frame, measured properly

If you keep one spare frame size in a cupboard, make it 11x14. It is the most versatile frame in general retail: it takes an 11x14 print at full bleed, an 8x10 behind a mat, an 8.5x11 certificate, or a 9x12 sheet of art paper. Very few sizes do four jobs.

## The measurements

**Artwork opening:** 11 x 14 inches, or 27.9 x 35.6 cm.

**Rabbet:** typically 11.125 x 14.125 inches — an eighth of an inch of clearance in each direction so the contents drop in without binding.

**Area:** 154 square inches. Worth stating because people underestimate it. An 11x14 is nearly twice the area of an 8x10, not a slight increase.

**Outside dimensions**, which is what the wall actually gives up:

**Weight**, assembled, with the usual materials:

- Wood moulding, 2mm float glass, 4-ply mat, MDF backing: roughly 2.5 to 3 lb
- The same frame with acrylic instead of glass: roughly 1.6 to 2 lb
- Aluminium section with acrylic: under 1.5 lb

All of these hang safely from a single picture hook into drywall. You do not need a stud, an anchor or a wire at this size — though a wire distributes load better and lets you nudge the frame level, which matters more day to day than the weight rating does.

## What fits, and how

### An 11x14 print, unmatted

The straightforward case. The print fills the opening, the rabbet overlaps its outer eighth of an inch on each side, and nothing is visible but the image. Use this when the image is meant to run to the edge — photographic prints of landscapes, posters, reproductions where a border would fight the composition.

The risk is that any inaccuracy in the print cut shows. A print trimmed to 10.9 inches wide leaves a hairline gap on one side that your eye will find every single time you walk past. If you are printing at home, cut generously and trim to fit rather than the other way round.

### An 8x10 behind a mat

The most common use of this frame, and the reason it is stocked as heavily as it is. An 11x14 mat with an 8x10 opening cuts a hole of about 7.5 x 9.5 inches, overlapping the print by a quarter of an inch on each side. That leaves a visible border of roughly 1.5 inches at the sides and 2 inches top and bottom on a weighted mat.

Ready-made mats in this combination cost very little, come in white, off-white, black and a handful of colours, and turn a mass-market frame into something that looks considered. If you buy one accessory for a frame, buy this one.

### An 8.5x11 document

Letter-size certificates and documents fit an 11x14 frame with a mat cut for 8.5x11. The resulting border is narrower — about 1.25 inches — which suits documents, where a wide mat starts to look like an award ceremony. This is a much better solution than an 8.5x11 frame, which pins the document to the frame edge with nothing to breathe.

### A 9x12 sheet

Art paper pads come in 9x12, and an 11x14 frame with a 9x12 opening gives a one-inch border. Tight, but acceptable for studies and sketches where you want to keep the frame small. For finished work, step up to a 12x16 frame instead.

## The ratio problem, honestly

11x14 reduces to a ratio of about 1:1.273. Nothing else in the standard size list shares it. 8x10 is 1:1.25, which is close but not equal.

In practice this matters in exactly one situation: printing an image to fill an 11x14 frame edge to edge from a file composed for 8x10. Scaled to 11 inches wide, an 8x10 image is 13.75 inches tall — a quarter inch short of the opening. You will either see the backing board along one edge or you will crop.

## Buying an 11x14

Because the size is so common, the quality spread is enormous. Five things are worth checking before you commit.

**Glazing.** Cheap frames at this size ship with thin styrene rather than glass or proper acrylic. Styrene scratches if you look at it wrongly and yellows within a few years. Glass or true acrylic is a meaningful upgrade and is usually identifiable from weight alone.

**Backing.** A stiff MDF or hardboard back holds artwork flat. A flexible card back lets it bow, and a bowed print touching glass will eventually stick to it.

**Corners.** Look at the mitres from the front. Gaps at the corners on a brand-new frame mean the joins were not properly clamped, and they will open further as humidity changes.

**Hanging hardware.** Sawtooth hangers are acceptable at this size but allow only one hanging position and cannot be levelled. D-rings and wire cost pennies more and are worth swapping in.

**Depth.** If you plan to mat, check the rabbet is deep enough for glazing plus mat plus artwork plus backing — about a quarter of an inch in total. Very slim decorative frames are not.

## When not to use 11x14

If the artwork is itself 11x14 and you want it matted, you need a 16x20 frame, not this one. If the artwork is a poster, 11x14 is too small to read as anything but a postcard on most walls. And if you are building a gallery wall of mixed sizes, 11x14 works best as the repeating mid-size element rather than the largest piece — it does not have the presence to anchor a wall on its own.

## Resolution at 11x14

A 300 DPI print needs 3300 x 4200 pixels — 13.9 megapixels. At 200 DPI, adequate for wall viewing, it needs 2200 x 2800, or 6.2 megapixels. Almost any modern file clears the second figure comfortably.

# Poster frame sizes and what they fit

Poster framing has one problem that ordinary picture framing does not: posters are printed to advertised sizes that the paper does not always honour. A 24x36 poster is often 23.75 x 35.75. A movie one-sheet described as 27x40 is regularly 27x41. Before anything else in this guide is useful, measure the sheet you actually own.

## The standard poster sizes

Internationally the equivalents are A3 (11.7 x 16.5 in), A2 (16.5 x 23.4 in), A1 (23.4 x 33.1 in), 30x40 cm, 50x70 cm and 70x100 cm. None of these convert cleanly into US sizes, which is the single biggest source of poster framing frustration for anyone buying prints from European sellers.

## The sizes shops actually stock

18x24 and 24x36 are available in any general store. 27x40 is available anywhere that sells movie memorabilia. Everything else — 12x18, 20x30, 22x28, 30x40 — is an online or specialist purchase. This is worth knowing before you commit to a poster size, because a print that costs fifteen dollars can easily need a forty-dollar special-order frame.

## Weight is the real constraint

A poster frame is mostly glazing, and glazing is where the weight is. Approximate weights for a 2mm float glass sheet against 2mm acrylic:

Add the moulding, backing and hardware and a glazed 24x36 wooden frame lands around 11 to 13 pounds. That needs a proper wall fixing — a stud, a toggle, or two hooks rated well above the load — and it needs the frame's own joints to be strong enough not to rack under their own weight.

For posters specifically, acrylic wins nearly every time. Posters are reproducible. The scratch resistance of glass is not worth eight pounds hanging over a sofa.

## Matting a poster

Below 24x36, a mat transforms a poster. It separates a mass-produced image from the wall, gives it a border the design was probably never given, and makes the whole thing read as a deliberately hung object rather than a thing taped up in a dorm.

Standard pairings:

- 11x17 poster in a 16x20 frame
- 12x18 poster in an 18x24 frame
- 16x20 poster in a 20x24 or 22x28 frame
- 18x24 poster in a 22x28 or 24x30 frame
- 24x36 poster in a 30x40 frame

Above 24x36, matting starts to cost more than the poster and demands wall space most rooms do not have. At that point full-bleed is the sensible choice.

## Snap frames and clip frames

Two categories exist that ordinary picture framing does not have.

**Snap frames** — sometimes called poster snap frames — have four hinged aluminium edges. You flip them open, drop the poster on the backing behind a clear styrene sheet, and snap them shut. Changing a poster takes fifteen seconds. They exist for retail and cinema display, they look exactly like what they are, and if your poster changes monthly they are the correct answer regardless of aesthetics.

**Clip frames** are a sheet of glass or acrylic and a backing board held together with spring clips at the edges, with no moulding at all. They are cheap, they look minimal, and the exposed glass edges chip. Acceptable for temporary display; not something to trust with anything you would be upset to damage.

## Framing a poster without damaging it

Three rules, in order of how often they are broken.

**Never trim a poster to fit a frame.** It permanently destroys any collectible value, and a trimmed edge is always visible up close. If the poster is slightly too large, the frame is wrong, not the poster.

**Let a rolled poster relax first.** Unroll it, lay it flat under a few heavy books with clean paper between, and leave it a day or two. Forcing a curled poster into a frame builds in a permanent bow that presses the centre against the glazing.

**Do not dry-mount unless you are certain.** Dry-mounting bonds a poster permanently to a board. It gives a perfectly flat result and it is irreversible. For a reproduction you will replace in three years, fine. For anything signed, limited, or older than you are, do not.

## Hanging a large poster frame

At 24x36 and above, take the hanging seriously.

- Use two fixings, not one. Two hooks spaced roughly a third of the frame width apart stop the frame rotating and let you level it precisely.
- Find a stud where you can. Where you cannot, use toggle bolts or self-drilling anchors rated at least three times the frame's weight.
- Hang the centre of the image at about 57 to 60 inches from the floor — gallery eye level.
- Add adhesive bumpers to the bottom corners so the frame sits off the wall, hangs straight, and does not trap dust behind it.

## Measuring a poster properly

Because printed poster sizes drift from their advertised ones, measuring is not optional.

Lay the poster flat and measure both dimensions at two points each — top and bottom, left and right. Posters are frequently cut slightly out of square, and the figure you need is the **largest** measurement in each direction, since that is what has to fit inside the frame.

If the poster measures within an eighth of an inch of a standard size, a standard frame will hold it. Between an eighth and half an inch under, it will fit but may shift — a couple of pieces of archival tape at the top corners, attaching it to the backing board, solves that. More than half an inch under, and it needs a mat to look intentional.

If it measures **over** a standard size in any direction, the frame is wrong. Do not trim it.

# Diploma and graduation frames

Diploma framing goes wrong in a predictable way: someone buys a frame based on the size they assume a diploma is, discovers it is a different size, and ends up with a document that has been trimmed, taped, or left in a drawer for a decade. Measuring first solves almost all of it.

## Measure before you buy anything

Diploma sizes are not standardised. Across US institutions the common issue sizes are:

Measure the sheet itself, corner to corner, in both directions, with a ruler rather than a tape. Note whether the document has an embossed seal near an edge, because a mat opening has to clear it or cut across it.

If the diploma has not arrived yet, most registrars will tell you the dimensions if you ask. That is a two-minute email that saves a return.

## Why a mat is not optional here

For most framing, matting is an aesthetic choice. For documents it is closer to a requirement.

**It keeps paper off the glazing.** In a humid room, paper pressed against glass will eventually bond to it. Separating a stuck document from glass without destroying it is a conservation job. A mat creates the air gap that prevents this outright.

**It gives the document somewhere to sit.** Diplomas are typographically formal, with wide printed margins already. Framed tight to the edge they look cramped; matted, they look like what they are.

**It creates space for a plate.** The engraved name-and-year plate that most people want is fitted to the mat, not the document.

The standard treatment is a double mat: an outer mat in a neutral colour and a thin inner reveal — usually an eighth to a quarter of an inch — in one of the institution's colours. It costs little more than a single mat and is the detail that makes a diploma frame look bought rather than assembled.

## Frame sizes for common diplomas

The second column is larger because a name plate needs 1.5 to 2 inches of clear mat below the opening. If you plan to add one, buy for it now — retrofitting means recutting the mat.

## Double and multi-opening frames

A double diploma frame holds two documents in one frame. Two arrangements are used.

**Side by side** suits two documents of the same size and reads as a pair. It needs a wide wall — two 8.5x11 openings with proper borders puts the frame at roughly 22x16 inches.

**Stacked vertically** suits documents of different sizes, with the more advanced degree conventionally placed above. It is easier to hang and takes less wall.

Both need more mat between the openings than around the outside edges, or the two documents read as one crowded block. Two to three inches between openings is the working figure.

## Tassels, medals and other objects

A tassel cannot go under flat glazing. It has real thickness, and pressing it flat both ruins the tassel and embosses a mark into the document beside it.

The solutions, in ascending order of cost:

**Spacers.** Clear plastic strips that sit between the glazing and the mat, lifting the glass by an eighth to a quarter of an inch. Enough for a flattened tassel, not for a medal.

**A deep-rabbet frame.** A moulding with half an inch or more of depth, giving room for a tassel arranged rather than crushed.

**A shadow box.** A purpose-built deep frame, typically one to three inches internally, that holds a diploma, a tassel, a cord and a photograph together. This is the right answer if you want to display more than a document, and it is a different purchase from a diploma frame.

## Glazing and light

Diplomas are hung in offices, corridors and studies, often opposite a window, and they stay there for thirty years. That is the exact recipe for fading: printed ink loses density, coloured seals shift, and the paper itself yellows unevenly where a mat has shielded part of it.

UV-filtering acrylic blocks the great majority of ultraviolet light and adds a modest amount to the cost of a frame. For a document that cannot be reprinted, it is the most worthwhile upgrade available. Standard glass blocks very little UV; standard acrylic blocks somewhat more but is not marketed for it.

The other thing that helps costs nothing: do not hang it in direct sun. No glazing available saves a document from a south-facing window over decades.

## Mounting the document

Never glue, never tape across the face, never dry-mount an original.

The correct method is hinging: two small archival hinges — Japanese tissue with wheat starch paste, or a purpose-made archival hinging tape — attached to the top edge of the document only. The document then hangs from the top and is free to expand and contract with humidity. Attaching all four edges causes the paper to buckle as it moves.

For a diploma you are not precious about, photo corners are a perfectly good alternative. They touch no adhesive to the document at all and are completely reversible.

## Buying: branded or not

University-licensed frames are sold through campus stores and licensed manufacturers. What you are paying for is the embossed mat with the institution's name and seal in the correct colours, which is genuinely not something you can approximate at home, plus a licence fee.

What you are usually not getting is a better frame. The mouldings on branded diploma frames are ordinary, and the glazing is frequently plain acrylic rather than UV.

If the embossing matters to you, one good option is to buy the licensed mat on its own where it is offered, and pair it with a better frame and UV glazing bought separately. It costs about the same and produces a noticeably better object. # The 12x18 frame

12x18 is the frame size that photography wants and retail does not stock. It is exactly 2:3 — three times a 4x6 print in each direction — which makes it the smallest large-ish frame that takes a camera photograph without cropping a thing.

## The numbers

**Opening:** 12 x 18 inches, 30.5 x 45.7 cm, 216 square inches.

**Aspect ratio:** 2:3, shared with 4x6, 8x12, 16x24, 20x30 and 24x36.

**Outside dimensions:**

## Why the size exists at all

Every standard photo print size in the 2:3 family is a whole multiple of 4x6:

12x18 is the 3x step, and it sits in a useful gap: bigger than the 8x10-and-11x14 range that dominates shelves, smaller than the poster sizes that demand real wall commitment.

Photo labs offer it because it is honest. A lab that offers only 8x10 and 16x20 is quietly cropping 17% off every customer's long edge. Offering 12x18 lets a 3:2 file print as shot.

## The stocking problem

Here is the awkward part. 12x18 is a genuine standard size and general retailers largely ignore it.

Walk into a supermarket, a pharmacy or a general homewares shop and you will find 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 18x24 and 24x36. You will very rarely find 12x18. The reason is shelf economics rather than anything about the size: the shelf goes to what turns over fastest, and the sizes people are handed by portrait studios turn over fastest.

Where you will find it:

- Online frame retailers, in a full range of finishes
- Framing suppliers, as a stock chop
- Photo labs that sell framed prints
- Art supply retailers, in basic profiles

None of that is difficult; it just means you cannot buy the frame on the way home. If same-day availability matters, print at 11x14 and accept the crop, or go up to 18x24 and mat the 12x18 inside it.

## What fits

**A 12x18 print, unmatted.** The primary use, and a good one — the print fills the frame and the shape is right for a camera file.

**An 8x12 print behind a mat.** A 12x18 mat with an 8x12 opening gives two inches at the sides and three top and bottom. Both sizes are 2:3, so the opening and the frame share a shape and the border reads as even even though it is not.

**An A3 sheet with a custom mat.** A3 is 11.7 x 16.5 inches. Bare in a 12x18 frame it is loose by a third of an inch horizontally and an inch and a half vertically — a gap large enough to look like a mistake. Cut a mat to A3 and the problem disappears entirely.

**A 9x12 print, with reservations.** It fits behind a mat, but 9x12 is 3:4 and the frame is 2:3, so the border ends up much wider top and bottom than at the sides. Some people like the effect; most find it unbalanced. A [12x16 frame](/guides/16x20-frame) is the better home for a 9x12.

## Going up a size

To mat a 12x18 print, the standard answer is an [18x24 frame](/guides/18x24-frame) with a 12x18 mat opening. That gives a three-inch border and is an excellent pairing for two reasons: the proportions work, and 18x24 is one of the most widely stocked sizes there is.

That combination — buy the awkward size as a mat opening rather than as a frame — is a good general strategy. Mats are cut to order cheaply; frames in unusual sizes are not.

## Buying notes

**Check the ratio is right.** Some listings describe 12x18 frames as "A3 frames", which they are not. A3 is 11.7 x 16.5. If a listing gives both, believe the inches.

**Glazing.** At this size either glass or acrylic is fine. Glass weighs about 1.7 pounds; the frame is light enough that it does not matter.

**Hanging hardware.** Sawtooth hangers are common at this size and lock you into one orientation. If you might ever want to hang it the other way round, fit D-rings.

**Depth.** If you plan to mat down to 8x12, check the rabbet is at least three eighths of an inch deep. Thin decorative profiles often are not.

## Resolution at 12x18

A true 300 DPI print at this size needs 3600 x 5400 pixels, which is 19.4 megapixels. That is comfortably within reach of any camera made in the last decade and beyond most phones at their native resolution.

At 200 DPI — perfectly acceptable for a print viewed from four feet or more — the requirement drops to 2400 x 3600, or 8.6 megapixels. Almost any modern file will do.

The number worth checking is your file's actual pixel dimensions rather than its megapixel rating, because a heavily cropped 24-megapixel file can easily be under 10 megapixels by the time it reaches the printer. ## 12x18 versus the alternatives

If 12x18 turns out to be inconvenient, three sizes sit nearby and each trades something.

**11x14** is stocked everywhere and is 1:1.27 rather than 2:3. A 3:2 photo printed to fill an 11x14 loses about 15% of its long edge. You gain immediate availability and lose part of the image.

**12x16** is 3:4 and shares the 12-inch width. A 3:2 photo loses about 11% here. It suits art paper and phone photos better than camera files.

**16x24** is the next step up in the same 2:3 family and needs noticeably more wall. It is also harder to find than 12x18, so it solves availability by making it worse.

There is no size that is both 2:3 and universally stocked below 24x36. That is simply a gap in what retail carries, and the honest options are to order online, to mat up into an 18x24, or to accept a crop.

## Orientation and hanging

Nothing about a 12x18 frame favours portrait or landscape, but the hardware often does. Frames at this size frequently ship with a single sawtooth hanger fixed to one edge, which locks the orientation permanently.

If you might want to rotate the frame later — and with a 2:3 photograph you very well might — fit D-rings to both pairs of sides and use wire. It takes five minutes with a bradawl and a screwdriver, costs almost nothing, and makes the frame reusable for whatever comes next.

At 3 to 4 pounds a 12x18 hangs from a single hook rated for 20 pounds without concern, though two hooks keep it level against door slams and passing traffic. Felt bumpers on the bottom rear corners are worth adding regardless.

# The 20x30 frame

20x30 is the largest frame size that is still unambiguously about photography. It is exactly 2:3, exactly five times a 4x6 print, and the standard size photo labs offer at the top of their enlargement range.

## The numbers

**Opening:** 20 x 30 inches, 50.8 x 76.2 cm, 600 square inches.

**Aspect ratio:** 2:3, shared with 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24 and 24x36.

**Outside dimensions:**

A 20x30 sheet of 2mm float glass weighs about 4.8 pounds on its own. That is the single biggest variable in the table and the main argument for acrylic.

## Why photographers like this size

Every dimension in the 2:3 family is a straight multiple of 4x6:

That means a single file, composed once, works at every size with no crop decision at any step. If you print the same image at several sizes for different rooms — a common thing to want — the 2:3 family is the only one that lets you do it without recomposing.

The resolution question at 20x30 is real but manageable. A true 300 DPI print needs 6000 x 9000 pixels, which is 54 megapixels — more than most cameras. At 200 DPI you need 4000 x 6000, which is 24 megapixels and entirely ordinary. A 20x30 hung on a wall and viewed from six feet is perfectly sharp at 200 DPI. ## Availability, honestly

20x30 is a genuine standard size and it is not always on a shelf. General retailers carry 18x24 and 24x36 and frequently skip everything between.

Where it is reliably available:

- Photo labs and print services, which offer it as a standard enlargement
- Online frame retailers, in a full range of finishes
- Framing shops, as a stock chop size
- Art supply retailers, in basic profiles

If you are choosing a print size and you care about being able to buy a frame locally at short notice, that is a genuine reason to consider 24x36 instead. If you are ordering online anyway, the constraint disappears.

## Matting at 20x30

**Down to 16x24.** A 20x30 mat with a 16x24 opening gives a two-inch border. Both sizes are 2:3, so the artwork and the mat opening share a shape and the result looks entirely natural.

**Down to 12x18.** A much wider border — four inches at the sides, six top and bottom. This is a formal, gallery-style presentation that suits a smaller, denser image. It also makes a 12x18 print occupy 20x30 of wall, which is sometimes exactly the goal.

**Up to 24x36.** To mat a 20x30 print, buy a 24x36 frame with a 20x30 opening. This is one of the easiest step-ups in framing because both sizes are common and the two-inch border it produces is the conventional proportion.

## Glazing and hanging

At 20x30 the glazing decision has real consequences.

Acrylic is the default recommendation. It saves about three and a half pounds, does not shatter, and is easier to handle during assembly — a 20x30 glass sheet flexes noticeably when held at the edges, which is unnerving and occasionally fatal to the glass.

Glass remains reasonable for an original work in a stable location with a solid fixing, where the improved scratch resistance is worth having.

For hanging:

- Two fixings, spaced roughly ten inches either side of centre
- Rated at least double the assembled weight, each
- D-rings and wire rather than a sawtooth, so it can be levelled
- Centre of image at 57 to 60 inches from the floor
- Felt bumpers at the bottom rear corners

For a portrait-orientation 20x30 the top edge lands around 75 inches, which clears most furniture but is worth checking against low ceilings and sloped walls.

## The metric near-miss

50x70 cm is the European equivalent size and it is not the same thing. 50x70 cm converts to 19.7 x 27.6 inches — a third of an inch narrower and nearly two and a half inches shorter than 20x30.

A 50x70 print in a 20x30 frame therefore floats, badly, in the vertical direction. The gap is large enough to be obviously wrong rather than merely imprecise.

## Matting maths at this size

Because 20x30 is 2:3, its matting behaves predictably. A mat with an opening in the same ratio produces a border that is proportionally even, and one in a different ratio does not.

The first two look balanced because the opening and the frame share a shape — the border is wider top and bottom in absolute terms but proportionally identical, which reads as even. The last two look progressively less deliberate.

This is the practical argument for matching mat openings to frame ratios wherever possible, and it applies at every size.

## Buying and building

Because 20x30 is not always on a shelf, it is one of the sizes where building your own becomes genuinely attractive.

The material requirement, in 2-inch moulding: `2 × (20 + 30) + 8 × 2` = 116 inches, plus waste, so a single 10-foot stick just about covers it with nothing to spare. Buy two, or use a 1.5-inch moulding and fit it comfortably into one.

The saw needs to handle a 30-inch cut accurately, which means a mitre saw with proper stock support rather than one balanced on a bench. Everything else is the same process as any smaller frame — see the [step-by-step build](/guides/how-to-make-a-picture-frame).

If you are buying rather than building, check three things: that the rabbet is deep enough for glazing plus mat plus backing, that the backing supplied is rigid rather than corrugated card, and what hanging hardware comes in the box. Many frames at this size ship with a single sawtooth, which is inadequate for a 20-inch-wide frame.

# 5x7 picture frames

5x7 is the small frame that does real work. It is the standard shelf and desk size, the default for table numbers and place settings, and the smallest print that reads properly at conversational distance.

## The numbers

**Opening:** 5 x 7 inches, 12.7 x 17.8 cm, 35 square inches.

**Aspect ratio:** 7:5 (1:1.4).

**Outside dimensions:**

**Weight:** well under a pound. A 5x7 frame is a tabletop object by weight as well as by convention.

## The 4x6 trap

The most common 5x7 mistake is assuming a 4x6 photo fits one. It does not — not in any way that looks acceptable.

A 4x6 print in a bare 5x7 frame leaves half an inch of backing board visible along each side and a full inch along the top and bottom. There is nothing subtle about the result; it looks like the wrong print in the wrong frame, because it is.

The fix costs a couple of dollars: a 5x7 mat with a 4x6 opening. The mat overlaps the print by a quarter inch on each side, hides the backing entirely, and gives a half-inch border. Tight, but deliberate.

The underlying cause is the ratio difference. 4x6 is 3:2 (1.5); 5x7 is 7:5 (1.4). Printing a 3:2 file at 5x7 crops about 6.7% off the long edge, which is small enough that most people never notice and large enough to matter if something important is near the edge.

## Where 5x7 works

**Desks and shelves.** The viewing distance is two to three feet, at which 5x7 is comfortably legible. This is what the size is for.

**Table settings.** Wedding table numbers, place cards, menu cards. A 5x7 card in a frame with an easel back is the standard solution, and buying twenty identical frames in one finish costs less per unit than almost any other framing purchase.

**Grouped on a wall.** Five or more 5x7s in matching frames, hung with consistent two-inch spacing, form a single visual element that works. The consistency does the work — mismatched small frames look like clutter rather than a collection.

**Bedside and hallway shelves.** Small enough not to dominate, large enough to see.

## Where 5x7 does not work

**Alone on a wall.** A 6.5 x 8.5 inch object on an eight-foot wall reads as an accessory. If you want a single small print on a wall, mat it into an [8x10](/guides/8x10-frame) or an 11x14 frame instead — the image stays the same size and the object gains the presence it needs.

**Behind a thick mat.** A 5x7 mat with a 3.5x5 opening gives a three-quarter inch border, which is about as narrow as a mat can be before it looks accidental. Matting really wants more room than this size offers.

## Buying 5x7 frames

The size is inexpensive enough that people buy on appearance alone, which is reasonable. A few things still separate good from bad:

**The easel back.** Most 5x7 frames stand via a hinged easel. Better ones hinge from either side so the frame stands in both portrait and landscape; cheaper ones fix one orientation. If you are buying for table numbers, check this — half your frames turning out to be portrait-only is an irritating discovery on the day.

**Glazing.** Cheap 5x7 frames use styrene. At this size the weight saving is irrelevant and the scratch resistance of glass is worth having, since a desk frame gets handled constantly.

**Consistency across a batch.** If you are buying several, buy them in one order from one supplier. Nominally identical frames from different batches often differ subtly in finish, and the difference shows when they sit side by side.

**Combination hanging.** Frames with both an easel back and a hanging hook are more useful than either alone, and cost the same.

## Grouping 5x7s well

If you are putting several on a wall, the rules that make it work:

- **One finish.** Mixed finishes at this scale read as clutter. Mixed sizes are fine; mixed colours are not.
- **Consistent spacing.** Two inches between frames, measured edge to edge, held to across the whole group.
- **Align on a grid or a line.** Either a proper grid, or all frames sharing a top edge or a centre line. Deliberate irregularity is very hard to pull off at this scale.
- **At least five.** Three 5x7s look like an oversight. Five or more look like a decision.

## Materials at this size

Small frames are cheap enough that material choice is usually made on appearance, but the differences are real.

**Wood** is the most common and the most forgiving. At 5x7 even a soft timber is rigid enough, so pine and poplar frames perform as well as hardwood ones. The finish is what varies.

**Metal** — usually aluminium or a plated base metal — gives a much thinner profile than wood can at this size, which suits a desk where bulk is unwelcome. Plated finishes on cheap metal frames do wear through at the corners over years of handling.

**Acrylic and lucite** blocks work particularly well at 5x7. The print is clamped between two clear slabs and appears to float, there is no moulding at all, and the whole object is essentially indestructible. See [acrylic and lucite frames](/guides/acrylic-and-lucite-frames) for the details.

**Silver and silver-plate** frames are traditional for this size, particularly for wedding and christening photographs. Sterling silver tarnishes and needs periodic polishing; silver-plate tarnishes and eventually wears through to the base metal at the corners.

## The 5x7 as a gift frame

5x7 is the default gift-framing size, and it earns that position. It is large enough for a single photograph to read properly, small enough that the recipient is not committed to finding wall space, and inexpensive enough to give without awkwardness.

Two things make a gift frame better than the average one. First, put a photograph in it — an empty frame is a task handed to someone, while a filled one is a present. Second, choose a finish that is quiet rather than decorative, because the recipient has to live with it and a plainer frame survives more rooms.

## Common problems

**The print curls.** A 5x7 photograph in a frame with a flimsy backing bows away from the glazing over time. Cut a piece of card to the frame size and place it behind the print.

**The easel collapses.** Cheap easel backs are held by a friction hinge that loosens. A small piece of tape at the hinge is a passable fix; replacing the frame is the honest one.

**The photo shifts.** A print slightly smaller than 5x7 slides inside the frame. Two small pieces of archival tape at the top corners, attaching the print to the backing, hold it permanently without damaging it.

# The 8x10 frame

8x10 is the frame most people own without having chosen it. Portraits arrive in it, certificates come sized for it, and every shop stocks it. It is also, quietly, one of the more awkward sizes to use well.

## The numbers

**Opening:** 8 x 10 inches, 20.3 x 25.4 cm, 80 square inches.

**Aspect ratio:** 4:5 (1:1.25).

**Outside dimensions:**

**Weight:** roughly 1 to 2 lb with glass, under 1 lb with acrylic. Any picture hook holds one. This is the one size where adhesive hanging strips are genuinely adequate, though they will still eventually release in a hot room.

## Where 4:5 comes from, and why it matters

8x10 is not an arbitrary size. It is the exact dimension of a sheet of 8x10 large-format film, the format American portrait studios used for the better part of a century. The print size followed the negative, and the frame size followed the print.

The consequence is that 8x10 is the shape of a technology that essentially no longer exists. Modern cameras produce 3:2 files; phones produce 4:3. Neither is 4:5.

Printing a 3:2 photo to fill an 8x10 removes about 17% of the long edge — roughly 1.3 inches of a 12-inch-wide image, taken from one or both ends. On a landscape that is scenery. On a group portrait it is a person.

If you want your photographs uncropped, the 3:2 equivalent of 8x10 is [8x12](/guides/aspect-ratio-and-frame-sizes), which is much less widely stocked but exists. If you want to keep the 8x10 frame, mat the photo and let the mat cover the mismatch.

## What actually fits

**An 8x10 print, unmatted.** The obvious case. Fine for studio portraits, which were composed for the shape.

**A 5x7 behind a mat.** The standard matted combination. An 8x10 mat with a 5x7 opening leaves about 1.5 inches of border and turns a small print into something with presence.

**A 4x6 behind a mat.** A wider border — around 2 inches — which suits a snapshot better than a tight 5x7 opening does. This is a good way to make an ordinary photo look deliberate.

**Not an 8.5x11 document.** Letter paper is half an inch wider and an inch taller. It does not fit and should not be trimmed. Use an 8.5x11 frame or, better, an [11x14 frame](/guides/11x14-frame) with an 8.5x11 mat opening.

## The wall problem

An 8x10 frame hung alone on a wall of any size reads as small. This is not a matter of taste; it is a proportion problem. A 10x12 outside dimension against an eight-foot wall occupies about 1% of the visible surface, and the eye reads it as an accessory rather than a picture.

Three ways round it:

**Mat it up.** Put the 8x10 print in an 11x14 or 12x16 frame with a mat. The image is the same size; the object is half again as large and reads properly on a wall.

**Group it.** Three or more 8x10s in a row, in matching frames, with two to three inches between them, become a single visual element. Consistency matters more than the individual size — see the [gallery wall guide](/guides/gallery-wall-frames).

**Put it on a surface.** 8x10 is an excellent shelf, mantel and desk size, where it is viewed from three feet rather than ten.

## Buying an 8x10

The size is so heavily commoditised that the quality range runs from genuinely good to actively bad. Things that separate them:

**Glazing.** The cheapest 8x10 frames use thin styrene that scratches during the first dusting. Glass or true acrylic is worth the small premium and is usually detectable by weight.

**Backing.** Look for hardboard or thick card, not thin corrugated board. Thin backing lets a print bow into the glazing.

**The mat, if included.** Frames sold "8x10 matted to 5x7" often include a very thin mat with a shallow, ragged bevel. A separately bought 4-ply mat costs a few dollars and looks substantially better.

**Hanging hardware.** Most 8x10 frames ship with a sawtooth hanger and a fold-out easel back so they can stand or hang. That dual function is genuinely useful at this size.

## Multi-aperture 8x10 frames

A common variant holds two, three or four smaller photos behind a single 8x10 mat with multiple openings. These work when the photos are related — a sequence, a set of siblings, one event — and look cluttered when they are not.

The practical limit is three openings in an 8x10. Four openings leave borders too narrow to read as intentional, and the individual images end up around 2.5 x 3.5 inches, which is wallet size.

## When 8x10 is the right answer

Despite the reservations above, there are cases where it is exactly right:

- Studio portraits, which were composed for 4:5
- Desk and shelf display, where the viewing distance is short
- Grids of three or more, where the individual size stops mattering
- Certificates and awards sized 8x10 rather than letter
- Anywhere you want a print with genuinely universal availability of mats, glass and replacements

## Resolution and printing

An 8x10 at 300 DPI needs 2400 x 3000 pixels — 7.2 megapixels. Every phone and camera made in the last fifteen years clears that comfortably, which is one reason 8x10 remains the default enlargement.

The catch is not resolution but cropping. Because the frame is 4:5 and your file is almost certainly 3:2 or 4:3, the print service has to remove material. Most default to a centre crop, which is rarely the right crop.

Two ways to keep control: crop the file yourself to 4:5 before uploading, so you decide what leaves; or order the print at "fit" rather than "fill", which prints the whole image with white borders that a mat then covers.

## Multi-aperture and collage 8x10s

A common variant holds two, three or four smaller photos behind a single 8x10 mat with multiple openings.

These work when the photos are genuinely related — a sequence, a set of siblings, one event — and look cluttered when they are not. The practical limit is three openings. At four, the individual images drop to around 2.5 x 3.5 inches, which is wallet size, and the mat borders between them become too narrow to read as deliberate.

## Cost and where to buy

8x10 is the most commoditised frame size there is, which means the price range is enormous and correlates only loosely with quality. A general-retail 8x10 and a good one from an online framer can differ by a factor of five, and the difference is in glazing, backing rigidity and corner joints rather than in anything visible in a listing photograph.

If you are buying several for a grid, order them together from one source. # The 18x24 frame

18x24 is the size that finally reads as a picture rather than a photograph. It is the standard small poster in North America, a clean 3:4 art shape, and — unusually for a poster size — stocked in ordinary shops.

## The numbers

**Opening:** 18 x 24 inches, 45.7 x 61 cm, 432 square inches.

**Aspect ratio:** 3:4 (1:1.333), shared with 9x12, 12x16 and 30x40.

**Outside dimensions:**

This is the threshold where a single nail stops being adequate. Two hooks rated for 25 pounds each, spaced about six inches either side of centre, is the sensible minimum.

## Why 3:4 is useful

18x24's ratio matches the default output of most phone cameras, which is 4:3. That is genuinely convenient: a photo taken on a phone, printed at 18x24, fits with no cropping at all.

It also matches standard art paper — 9x12 pads, and the 12x16 and 18x24 sheets sold for drawing and watercolour. Anyone framing their own work on paper is very likely already working in this family.

What it does not match is a camera file. A 3:2 photograph printed to fill an 18x24 loses about 11% of its long edge. Less brutal than the 17% an 8x10 costs, but still visible. The 3:2 equivalent at this scale is 16x24 or 20x30.

## What fits

**An 18x24 poster, unmatted.** The primary use. Note that commercially printed posters advertised as 18x24 are sometimes a fraction under — measure before assuming.

**A 12x18 print behind a mat.** The standard matted combination, giving a three-inch border. This is a strong presentation: 12x18 is a 3:2 size, so a camera photo fits it exactly, and the mat handles the shape change to the 3:4 frame.

**A 16x20 print behind a mat.** Technically possible, but the resulting one-inch border is too narrow to read as a design decision. Use a 20x24 frame instead.

**An A2 sheet with a custom mat.** A2 is 16.5 x 23.4 inches. Placed bare in an 18x24 frame it floats with a visible gap. A custom mat cut to A2 fixes it completely and costs less than a custom frame.

## The poster question

18x24 is where most people first frame a poster properly, and there are two decisions that matter.

**Do not trim the poster.** If it is slightly oversized, the frame is wrong. Trimming is irreversible and always visible along the cut edge.

**Let a rolled poster flatten first.** Unroll it, lay it under weight with clean paper above and below, and leave it a day or two. A poster forced into a frame while still curled will press its centre against the glazing permanently.

Beyond that, an 18x24 poster in a frame with a mat stops looking like a poster and starts looking like a print — which is usually the point of framing it at all.

## Glass versus acrylic here

18x24 sits right at the crossover. A 2mm glass sheet at this size weighs about 3.5 pounds; the acrylic equivalent about 1.4.

Glass is defensible: the weight is still manageable, and the scratch resistance matters on a frame that gets dusted. Acrylic is defensible: it halves the load on the fixing, and it does not produce large sharp fragments if the frame comes down.

The deciding factors are usually location and contents. Above a bed, a sofa or a child's play area, use acrylic. For an original work in a stable spot with a solid fixing, glass is fine and slightly clearer. For posters specifically, acrylic — a poster is reproducible and the weight saving is not.

## Hanging one

The practical differences from smaller frames:

**Two fixings, not one.** An 18x24 on a single hook will rotate off level every time someone closes a door nearby.

**Wire, not sawtooth.** Fit D-rings about a third of the way down each side and run wire between them with a couple of inches of slack. This lets you slide the frame horizontally to centre it after hanging, which a sawtooth does not.

**Height.** Centre of image at 57 to 60 inches from the floor. For a portrait-orientation 18x24 that puts the top edge around 71 inches.

**Bumpers.** Felt pads on the bottom rear corners hold the frame parallel to the wall and stop it marking paint.

## Buying at 18x24

**Check the actual internal size.** Frames sold as "18x24 poster frames" occasionally have a rabbet cut tight to exactly 18x24 with no clearance, which makes loading a poster genuinely difficult. A frame with an eighth of an inch of play is easier to live with.

**Look at the backing.** An 18x24 sheet of thin card bows noticeably under its own weight. Hardboard or thick foam board is what you want.

**Consider a snap frame if the content changes.** If you swap posters seasonally, an aluminium snap frame changes them in seconds and never needs dismantling. It looks commercial, which is either a problem or exactly right depending on the room.

**Buy the mat separately.** Ready-made 18x24 frames rarely include a good mat. A 4-ply acid-free mat with a 12x18 opening, bought separately, transforms the result for a few dollars.

## Resolution at 18x24

A 300 DPI print at this size needs 5400 x 7200 pixels — 38.9 megapixels, which is beyond most cameras.

At 200 DPI, which is entirely adequate for something hung on a wall and viewed from four feet or more, the requirement is 3600 x 4800, or 17.3 megapixels. That is within reach of most recent cameras and many phones.

## Cost, relatively

For the same 18x24 piece across the common routes:

# The 16x20 frame

16x20 is the most useful frame size in the standard range. It takes a 16x20 print at full bleed, an 11x14 behind a generous mat, a 12x16 behind a modest one, or a 16x20 canvas in a floater. That flexibility, combined with universal availability, makes it the size to reach for when you are not sure.

## The numbers

**Opening:** 16 x 20 inches, 40.6 x 50.8 cm, 320 square inches — exactly four times the area of an 8x10.

**Aspect ratio:** 4:5, identical to 8x10 and 24x30.

**Outside dimensions:**

At the top of that range a single small nail is not sufficient. Use a hook rated for at least 25 pounds, and preferably two of them so the frame cannot rotate.

## The three ways to use it

### Full-bleed 16x20

The print fills the opening. Suits canvases, posters, and photographic prints where the composition runs to the edges. This is also the standard size for stretched canvases, which is worth knowing if you are pairing a frame with painting supplies.

### Matted to 11x14

The most common combination in the size. A 16x20 mat with an 11x14 opening gives about 2.5 inches of border at the sides and slightly more at the bottom on a weighted mat. That is generous enough to look like a gallery presentation rather than a compromise.

This pairing is why 11x14 and 16x20 are both stocked so heavily: they are the two ends of the same relationship.

### Matted to 12x16

A narrower two-inch border, which suits larger or busier images that would be crowded by a 2.5-inch mat. Less commonly available ready-made than the 11x14 version, but any framer will cut it.

## The 4:5 constraint

16x20 shares 8x10's ratio and therefore shares its problem: it does not match a camera file.

A 3:2 photograph printed to fill a 16x20 loses about 17% of the long edge — around 3.4 inches of a 20-inch-wide image. That is a significant crop and one you should make deliberately rather than let a print lab make for you.

The workarounds are the usual three. Print at 16x24 instead, which is 3:2 and fits the image exactly. Crop consciously to 4:5 in software, choosing what leaves. Or print at "fit" with borders and cover them with a mat cut to the image's own ratio — which is why a 16:9 panorama can live perfectly happily inside a 16x20 frame.

## Framing a canvas at 16x20

16x20 is one of the most common stretched-canvas sizes, and framing one is not the same job as framing a print.

A standard 16x20 frame has a rabbet of a quarter to three eighths of an inch. A stretched canvas is three quarters of an inch deep on thin bars, and an inch and a half on gallery-depth ones. It will not go in.

The correct solution is a [floater frame](/guides/float-and-floater-frames): a deep, open-backed frame that the canvas is screwed into from behind, sitting inside it with a deliberate quarter-inch gap all round. It reads as intentional, adds no glazing, and is the standard way canvases are framed.

The wrong solution, which is nevertheless common, is to buy a conventional frame and remove the glazing and backing to make room. The canvas then sits proud of the frame face, which looks like exactly what it is.

## Buying at 16x20

The size is common enough to be cheap and large enough that corners matter. What to check:

**Corner joinery.** At 16x20 a glued-only mitre in a soft moulding will open within a couple of years. V-nailed or splined corners hold.

**Backing rigidity.** A 16x20 sheet of thin card bows visibly. Hardboard or thick foam board keeps the print flat against the mat.

**Glazing type.** Both glass and acrylic are reasonable here. If the frame is unexpectedly light for its size and the glazing flexes, it is styrene — worth replacing.

**Hanging hardware.** Many 16x20 frames still ship with a single sawtooth. Fit D-rings and wire; it takes five minutes and makes the frame levellable for the rest of its life.

**Depth for matting.** If you plan a double mat, check the rabbet is at least three eighths of an inch. Slim decorative profiles at this size often are not.

## Going larger from 16x20

If you want a 16x20 print matted, the next steps are 20x24 for a two-inch border or 22x28 for three. Both are genuine standard sizes; neither is stocked in general retail, so expect to order. ## Resolution at 16x20

A 300 DPI print at 16x20 needs 4800 x 6000 pixels — 28.8 megapixels. That is more than most cameras deliver, and more than any phone delivers at native resolution.

In practice you do not need it. A 16x20 hung on a wall is viewed from four to six feet, at which 200 DPI is indistinguishable from 300. That drops the requirement to 3200 x 4000, or 12.8 megapixels, which almost any recent file satisfies.

The figure to be wary of is heavy cropping. A 24-megapixel file cropped to a third of its area is an 8-megapixel file, and printing that at 16x20 gives about 150 DPI — acceptable at a distance, visibly soft up close.

## What a 16x20 costs to frame

Relative pricing for the same 16x20 piece, which is more durable information than absolute figures:

## Hanging a 16x20

At 4 to 6 pounds this is the size where hanging hardware starts to matter.

- Two hooks rated 25 pounds each, spaced about five inches either side of centre. One hook lets a 16-inch-wide frame rotate every time a door closes.
- D-rings and wire rather than a sawtooth, so the frame can be nudged horizontally after hanging.
- Centre of image at 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
- Felt bumpers on the bottom rear corners.

Above a sofa or sideboard, leave 6 to 10 inches between the furniture top and the frame's bottom edge.

# The 8.5x11 frame

8.5x11 is the document frame. It exists because US Letter paper exists, and it is the only standard frame size defined by an office supply rather than by a photographic or artistic tradition.

## The numbers

**Opening:** 8.5 x 11 inches, 21.6 x 27.9 cm, 93.5 square inches.

**Aspect ratio:** 17:22, about 1:1.294. Not a clean ratio, and shared with nothing else.

**Outside dimensions:**

**Weight:** 1 to 2 lb. Any hook will do.

## The 8x10 confusion

The most common problem with 8.5x11 is that people try to use an 8x10 frame instead, because 8x10 is the size that is always in stock.

Letter paper is half an inch wider and a full inch taller than an 8x10 opening. It does not fit, and the only way to make it fit is to trim it — which on a certificate, a diploma or anything with a signature is an irreversible mistake.

If an 8.5x11 frame is not available, the correct substitute is an [11x14 frame](/guides/11x14-frame) with an 8.5x11 mat opening. That is a better result than a bare 8.5x11 frame in almost every respect, and 11x14 frames are stocked everywhere.

## The A4 near-miss

A4 is 8.27 x 11.69 inches. Against 8.5x11 that is:

- **0.23 inches narrower** — the sheet is loose in the frame
- **0.69 inches taller** — the sheet does not fit at all

This catches people constantly with certificates issued outside the United States, and with art prints bought from European sellers. A4 in an 8.5x11 frame is not a tight fit; it is an impossible one in the vertical direction.

## Framing documents properly

Documents have requirements that photographs do not.

**Mat them.** Not primarily for looks, though it helps. Paper pressed against glazing will bond to it in humid conditions, and separating a certificate from glass without destroying it is a conservation job. A mat creates the air gap that prevents it outright.

The conventional treatment is a mat with an 8.5x11 opening in an 11x14 frame, giving a 1.25 inch border. That is narrower than you would use for artwork, and correctly so — documents already have generous printed margins, and a wide mat on top of them starts to look ceremonial.

**Use UV glazing.** Documents hang in offices, corridors and studies, often opposite windows, for decades. That is the exact recipe for fading: printed inks lose density, coloured seals shift, and paper yellows unevenly where a mat has shielded part of it. UV-filtering acrylic blocks 97% or more of ultraviolet and costs modestly more than plain glazing. It is the single most worthwhile upgrade for anything you cannot reprint.

**Hinge, do not glue.** Attach the document with archival hinging tape or photo corners along the **top edge only**, so it can expand and contract with humidity. Taping all four edges causes buckling. Ordinary household tape yellows, hardens and stains through the paper within a few years.

**Never dry-mount an original.** Dry-mounting bonds a document permanently to a board. It gives a flat result and it is irreversible. Acceptable for a photocopy; never for a signed or sealed original.

## Multi-document arrangements

Two or three certificates in one frame is a common request. Two arrangements work.

**Stacked vertically** for documents of different importance, with the more significant one above. This is the easier arrangement to hang and takes less wall.

**Side by side** for equal documents. It needs a wide wall — two 8.5x11 openings with proper borders puts the frame at roughly 22 x 16 inches.

In both cases, leave more mat between the openings than around the outside, or the two documents read as one crowded block. Two to three inches between openings is the working figure. ## Buying an 8.5x11 frame

**Check the actual opening.** Some frames marketed as "certificate frames" have an 8x10 opening with an 8.5x11 outside size. Read the specification, not the marketing.

**Look for D-rings on both sides.** Many document frames ship with a single fixed hanger that locks the orientation. Certificates are usually portrait, but not always, and awards frequently are not.

**Check the glazing.** Office-supply document frames often use very thin styrene. For anything you intend to keep, replace it with acrylic or, better, buy a frame with proper glazing to start with.

**Consider depth.** If you might add a name plate or a second mat later, a rabbet of at least three eighths of an inch gives you room to change your mind.

## When 8.5x11 is the wrong choice

If the document matters — a degree, a professional certification, a commission — an 8.5x11 frame is the minimum viable option rather than the right one. The document sits tight against the frame edge with nothing to breathe, and the presentation reads as functional rather than considered.

The better answer, for perhaps five dollars more, is an 11x14 frame with an 8.5x11 mat. It is the same document, in a frame that treats it as though it mattered.

## Landscape orientation

Awards, licences and some certificates are printed landscape — 11 inches wide by 8.5 tall. Most 8.5x11 frames are designed and hung portrait, and many ship with a single fixed hanger on one edge.

Check for D-rings on both pairs of sides before buying, or plan to fit them yourself. It takes five minutes with a bradawl and a screwdriver and makes the frame usable either way permanently.

If you are buying several frames for a mixed set of documents, buy frames with wire hanging rather than sawtooth hangers for exactly this reason.

## Multiple documents on a wall

Professional certifications tend to accumulate, and a wall of them is a common framing project.

Two approaches work. **Identical frames in a grid** — three across, two down, with two-inch gaps — is the simplest and always looks intentional. **A single large frame with multiple openings** puts several documents behind one mat and takes considerably less wall.

Either way, consistency does the work. Matching frames, matching mats and consistent spacing make a group of unrelated documents read as a deliberate display. ## What it costs

An 8.5x11 frame is inexpensive. Adding a custom-cut mat roughly doubles or triples that, and adding UV-filtering glazing adds more again.

For a document that will hang for thirty years, both upgrades are worth it and together still cost less than a modest meal. For a temporary certificate, a plain frame is entirely reasonable. The judgement is simply whether the document can be reprinted.

# The 24x36 frame

24x36 is the standard large frame in North America: the default poster size, a clean 2:3 photographic shape, and the largest size a general retailer reliably stocks. It is also the size at which framing stops being decoration and starts being a small engineering problem.

## The numbers

**Opening:** 24 x 36 inches, 61 x 91.4 cm, 864 square inches.

That last row is the point where a badly chosen wall fixing becomes dangerous rather than merely inconvenient.

## Why 2:3 matters here

24x36 is exactly the shape of a 35mm negative and of nearly every digital camera sensor. Scale a 6000 x 4000 pixel file to 36 inches on the long edge and it lands at 24 inches on the short edge with nothing to spare and nothing to crop.

That makes 24x36 the natural terminus for a photographic print run: 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36 all share the ratio, so the same file works at every step. Compare that with 8x10 and 16x20, which are 4:5 and force a crop on every camera file that meets them.

At 36 inches on the long edge you need 10800 pixels for a true 300 DPI print. Very few cameras deliver that. In practice a poster viewed from four feet away holds up perfectly at 150 DPI, which needs 5400 pixels — comfortably within reach of a 24-megapixel camera. ## Glazing: pick acrylic

At this size the glazing decision is not really a decision.

A 24x36 sheet of 2mm float glass weighs about 7 pounds on its own. It is awkward to carry, easy to flex, and if it breaks while you are handling a frame at arm's length above a hard floor, the pieces are large and sharp. The same sheet in 2mm acrylic weighs under 3 pounds and, if dropped, bounces.

The case for glass is scratch resistance and slightly better optical clarity. Both are real. Neither outweighs eight pounds of glass hanging above furniture where people sit. Use glass at 24x36 only when the artwork genuinely warrants it and the wall fixing is into structure.

If you do choose acrylic, buy a frame that ships with a protective film on both faces and leave it on until the moment of assembly. Acrylic attracts dust electrostatically; wipe it with a microfibre cloth and an anti-static spray, never with paper towel, which will haze it.

## Matting at 24x36

Two standard pairings, and they produce very different results.

**24x36 frame with a 20x30 opening.** A two-inch border. Proportionally modest at this scale, which suits posters and graphic work where the image is meant to dominate.

**24x36 frame with an 18x24 opening.** A three-inch border at the sides and rather more top and bottom. This reads as a gallery presentation and suits art prints, etchings and photographs where you want the eye to settle before it reaches the image.

Going the other way — putting a 24x36 print in a matted frame — needs a 30x40 frame, which is a specialist purchase and takes up nearly nine square feet of wall. Worth it for a single anchor piece; excessive for anything else.

## Hanging one properly

This is where 24x36 differs most from smaller frames.

**Use two fixings.** A single central hook lets a frame this wide rotate on the nail, and you will spend the rest of its life nudging it level. Two hooks spaced about 12 inches either side of centre hold it square permanently.

**Match the fixing to the weight, with margin.** For a 7-pound acrylic frame, two drywall anchors rated 20 pounds each is generous and takes ten minutes. For a 13-pound glazed frame, find a stud or use toggle bolts. Picture-hanging strips are not rated for this and will let go in warm weather.

**Height.** Centre of image at 57 to 60 inches. In portrait orientation the top of a 24x36 lands around 78 inches, which is above most door frames — check the wall has the height before you commit.

**Bumpers.** Two adhesive felt bumpers on the bottom rear corners keep the frame parallel to the wall, stop it marking the paint, and allow air behind it.

## Buying at this size

Cheap 24x36 frames exist and some of them are fine. Things that separate the acceptable from the disappointing:

- **Corner joints.** At this size a weak mitre will open. Look for frames that are joined with V-nails or splines, not just glued and stapled.
- **Backing rigidity.** A flexible backing board at 24x36 bows visibly and pushes the print into the glazing. You want hardboard or a thick foam board, not corrugated card.
- **Hanging hardware supplied.** Many cheap large frames ship with a single sawtooth hanger, which is inadequate. Budget for D-rings and wire regardless of what is in the box.
- **Whether it ships flat-packed.** Some large frames arrive as four lengths to be joined at home. That is not automatically bad, but it is a different project from opening a box and hanging something.

## Building one instead of buying

24x36 is the size at which ready-made frames start carrying a real premium and oversize shipping charges. Building from moulding is frequently cheaper.

Material needed in 2-inch moulding: `2 × (24 + 36) + 8 × 2` = 136 inches, plus waste — so roughly 12 feet, which means two standard sticks with a usable offcut left over.

The requirements beyond a smaller frame are a saw that will cut 36-inch stock accurately with proper support, a strap clamp long enough to span the frame, and stock at least an inch deep so the rails are rigid. Note that building lands between the two retail options rather than below both. The saving is real but modest; the reason to build is control over the moulding and the finish.

# 27x40 movie poster frames

27x40 is the modern American one-sheet — the standard cinema poster size since the mid-1980s. It is one of the few large frame sizes that is genuinely easy to buy, because the film industry standardised it and an entire display industry grew up around it.

## The size, and the one before it

**Current standard:** 27 x 40 inches, 68.6 x 101.6 cm.

**Pre-1985 standard:** 27 x 41 inches.

That single inch is the most consequential detail on this page. A poster printed before the changeover will not fit a 27x40 frame, and there is no acceptable way to make it — trimming an inch off a vintage one-sheet removes most of its collectible value and is visible for the rest of its life.

If you have an older poster, buy a 27x41 frame. They are made, though they need seeking out, and framing shops will chop one to size without difficulty.

## The other sizes posters actually come in

"Movie poster" covers several formats, and they are not interchangeable.

The 22.375 x 34 size deserves special mention because it catches so many people. It is not a film industry size at all — it is a retail poster size chosen to fit standard shipping tubes, and it appears constantly on posters sold through general retailers. It fits nothing exactly. A 24x36 frame with a mat cut to 22.375 x 34 is the standard solution.

Measure your poster before buying any frame. This is the size range where the advertised dimension and the printed dimension diverge most often.

## Weight, and why acrylic wins

At 27x40 the glazing is the dominant weight.

Five pounds of difference, hanging on a wall, usually above furniture where people sit. There is no serious argument for glass here unless the poster is genuinely valuable and the wall fixing goes into structure.

Acrylic also survives handling. Loading a 27x40 frame means holding a large sheet at arm's length while manoeuvring it into a rabbet — glass flexes alarmingly at this size and breaks into pieces large enough to be dangerous.

## Snap frames and lightboxes

Two poster-specific frame types exist that ordinary picture framing does not have.

**Snap frames** have four hinged aluminium edges. Flip them open, lay the poster on the backing behind a clear styrene sheet, snap them shut. Changing a poster takes fifteen seconds with the frame still on the wall.

They are what cinemas and retail displays use, they are inexpensive, and they look exactly like what they are. If your poster changes with the seasons or you rotate a collection, they are unambiguously the right tool. If the poster is permanent and the room is not a home cinema, a conventional moulding will look better.

**Lightboxes** are snap frames with an LED panel behind a translucent backing, so the poster is backlit. They are made for cinema lobbies and they are extremely effective in a dark room. They also need a power supply behind the frame, which is a wiring decision as much as a framing one.

## Framing a poster without ruining it

**Let it flatten first.** A poster shipped rolled will not lie flat straight out of the tube. Unroll it, place it face-down on a clean flat surface, cover it with clean paper and weight it evenly with books for two to seven days. Rushing this step builds a permanent bow into the middle of the poster.

**Folded posters need longer, and may need help.** Posters from the era when studios shipped them folded will have creases that never fully vanish. For anything valuable, **linen backing** is the conservation answer: the poster is mounted to a linen support by a specialist, which flattens the folds, stabilises the paper, and is generally considered to preserve rather than reduce value for vintage material. It is not cheap and it is not reversible in a casual sense, so it is a decision for genuinely collectible posters only.

**Do not dry-mount.** Dry-mounting bonds the poster permanently to a board. For a reprint you will replace, it is fine and gives a perfectly flat result. For anything with any collectible value, it is destructive.

**Use a rigid backing.** A 27x40 sheet of thin card bows under its own weight and lets the poster wander. Hardboard or a thick foam board keeps it flat.

## Hanging one safely

This is a heavy object on a wall.

- **Two fixings minimum**, spaced about a third of the frame width either side of centre.
- **Find a stud** if you possibly can. Where you cannot, use toggle bolts or heavy-duty self-drilling anchors rated at least three times the frame's weight — so 45 pounds or better for a 15-pound frame.
- **D-rings and wire**, not a sawtooth. At this width a sawtooth allows no levelling and concentrates the entire load on one point.
- **Height:** centre of image at 57 to 60 inches. In portrait orientation the top of a 27x40 lands around 80 inches, which is above most door heads — check the ceiling.
- **Bumpers** on the bottom rear corners.

## Checking a poster before you buy a frame

Measure both dimensions at two points each, and note which era the poster is from. Anything printed before the mid-1980s is likely to be 27x41 and will not fit a 27x40 frame.

# Metric frame sizes and their inch equivalents

Two frame systems exist in the world and they do not line up. Most people meet this the day they buy an art print from a European seller and discover that no frame in their local shop will hold it.

## The two systems

**Inches**, used in North America, with sizes inherited from photographic print standards and US paper: 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 8.5x11, 24x36.

**Metric**, used almost everywhere else, split into two families. The **A-series** — A5 through A1 — is a defined paper standard where every size has the ratio √2:1 and halving one gives exactly two of the next. The **round centimetre sizes** — 30x40, 40x50, 50x70 — are conventional retail sizes with no unifying ratio.

Neither system is better. They are simply incompatible, and the incompatibilities are frequently small enough to look like they might work, which is worse than being obviously different.

## A-series sizes

Every one of these has a ratio of 1:1.414. No US frame size does. That single fact is the root of every A-size framing problem.

Notice that these ratios are actually closer to US frame ratios than the A-series is. 20x30 cm is 3:2. 24x30 and 40x50 cm are 4:5. 30x40 cm is 3:4. The round centimetre sizes are, in ratio terms, the same family of shapes as US frames — just at different absolute sizes.

## The near-miss table

This is the part that costs people money. These pairs look interchangeable and are not.

Two rows deserve highlighting.

**A4 in an 8.5x11 frame does not fit.** The sheet is seven tenths of an inch taller than the opening. This is not a loose fit; it is an impossible one.

**A 70x100 cm print in a 27x40 frame does not fit either.** The print is wider than the frame's opening.

Everything else in that table fits with a gap. Gaps under about a quarter inch are tolerable — the print may shift slightly, and a strip of archival tape at the back holds it. Gaps over half an inch look like a mistake and need a mat.

## The solution, in almost every case: a mat

When a metric print and an imperial frame disagree, the cheapest and best-looking fix is a custom mat cut to the print's actual dimensions.

A custom mat costs perhaps fifteen to forty dollars depending on size and board quality, arrives in a few days, and produces a result that looks entirely deliberate. A custom frame costs three to five times that.

So: buy the next standard frame up, and have a mat cut. An A3 print goes into an 18x24 frame with an A3 opening and looks like a gallery presentation. The same print forced into a 12x18 frame looks like a compromise, because it is one.

## Converting properly

Multiply inches by 2.54 for centimetres; divide centimetres by 2.54 for inches. The important discipline is to **round only at the end**.

Converting 50 x 70 cm by rounding each dimension to the nearest inch gives 20 x 28. That happens to be right here. Converting 42 x 59.4 cm the same way gives 17 x 23, when the true figures are 16.54 x 23.39 — and a frame ordered on 17 x 23 is half an inch wrong in one direction.

## Buying metric frames in the US

Some retailers stock A4 and A3 frames, particularly those selling European-designed furniture and homewares. Larger metric sizes almost always need an online order from a specialist.

Two things to check before ordering:

**Whether the listed size is the opening or the outside.** European listings occasionally give the outside dimension, which is a different number entirely.

**Whether a mount is included.** Many European frames ship with a mount — the British term for a mat — already cut, often to a smaller A size. An A3 frame with an A4 mount is a common and useful configuration, and it is not always obvious from the listing.

## British and European terminology

If you are buying from a UK or European retailer, some words differ and the differences matter.

**Mount** means mat. A frame listed as "A3 with A4 mount" is an A3 frame containing a mat cut with an A4 opening — which is a genuinely useful configuration and not always obvious from the listing.

**Mount board** is mat board. **Mount cutter** is a mat cutter.

**Glazing** is used the same way in both systems, but "perspex" is the common British word for acrylic sheet.

**Frame size** in European listings usually means the artwork opening, as it does in the US — but not always. Some listings give the outside dimension of the moulding. Where a listing gives both, the smaller number is the opening.

# Mini and small picture frames

Small frames are the ones people buy without thinking and then cannot work out what to do with. Used deliberately they are among the most effective things in framing; used casually they turn a shelf into clutter.

## The sizes

The two workhorses are 4x6 and [5x7](/guides/5x7-picture-frames). Everything smaller is a specialist choice and should be made deliberately.

## Wallet size, explained

2.5 x 3.5 inches — exactly a playing card. The size comes from mid-century billfolds, and portrait studios still print sheets of eight or sixteen because school and family portrait packages have included them for seventy years.

Frames in the size exist but are genuinely awkward: at 2.5 x 3.5 the moulding is thicker than the print's short-edge margin, and the whole object is smaller than a phone. Wallet photos are usually better used in a multi-aperture mat, where six or eight sit inside one 11x14 frame and become a group portrait rather than eight tiny objects.

## Instant film sizes

Instant film does not match any conventional photo size, and it comes in two common formats.

**Square instant prints** are around 3.5 x 4.2 inches overall, with the image area about 3.1 x 3.1 and a distinctive wider border at the bottom. Frames made for this format have an opening sized to show the whole print including its border, because the border is the point.

**Mini instant prints** are around 2.1 x 3.4 inches overall, with an image area of about 1.8 x 2.4.

Both are sold with dedicated frames, and both look wrong in a generic frame of approximately the right size — the offset border only reads correctly if the whole print shows. If you frame instant film in a conventional frame, use a mat cut to the print's full outside dimension rather than to its image area.

## Displaying small frames well

A single small frame on a wall does not work. The reason is proportional: a 4 x 6 inch object on an eight-foot wall occupies about half a percent of the visible surface, and the eye reads it as a mark rather than a picture.

Four approaches that do work:

### The tight grid

Nine to sixteen identical frames in a regular grid, with consistent one to two inch gaps. The grid becomes a single large element and the individual size stops mattering. This requires genuine consistency — one frame size, one finish, one mat colour. Any variation reads as error at this scale.

### The picture ledge

A narrow shelf, with frames leaning against the wall rather than hung. Its advantage is that nothing is committed: you can add, remove and rearrange without touching the wall. It also lets you mix sizes freely, because the shared bottom line does the organising work that consistency would otherwise have to do.

Ledges want frames with a reasonable back edge to lean on, which rules out the very thinnest profiles.

### The multi-aperture mat

One larger frame — 11x14 or 16x20 — with a mat cut for several small openings. Six 4x6 openings in a 16x20 is a common configuration. This turns a set of small photos into one wall-scale object and is by far the most space-efficient option.

The limit is thematic: multi-aperture works when the photos belong together — one event, one trip, one family group — and looks arbitrary when they do not.

### The cluster on a surface

Three to seven frames of varying small sizes on a sideboard, mantel or windowsill. Here variety helps rather than hurts, because the eye reads a grouped collection of objects rather than a wall composition. The organising principle is height variation: mix 4x6 and 5x7, portrait and landscape, and stagger the depths.

## Matting at small sizes

Matting has a lower bound. A 4x6 mat with a 3.5x5 opening leaves a quarter-inch border — narrow, but still visibly deliberate. A 3.5x5 mat with a 2.5x3.5 opening leaves half an inch on the sides and three quarters top and bottom, which works.

Below 3.5x5, matting generally stops being useful. The border becomes so thin that it reads as a gap in the manufacturing rather than a design decision, and the mat's thickness starts to be a significant fraction of the frame's depth.

If you want a small image with a border, the better route is a larger frame with a wide mat: a 4x6 print in an 8x10 frame with a 2-inch border. The image stays small; the object gains presence.

## Buying small frames

**Buy in one batch.** If you want a grid or a set, order them together from one supplier. Nominally identical frames from different production runs differ subtly in finish, and at this size the differences sit inches apart and are obvious.

**Check the easel back.** Frames below about 3x3 often have an easel too small to stand reliably, especially on carpet or an uneven shelf. Look for a wide-footed easel or plan to lean them.

**Check the glazing.** Small frames almost universally ship with styrene, and at this size that is largely acceptable — the sheet is small enough to be stiff, and the frames are handled rather than dusted. It will still scratch.

**Consider depth for keepsakes.** If you want to frame a ticket, a pressed flower or a coin, a standard small frame has no room. A small shadow box with half an inch of internal depth costs little more and does the job properly.

Somewhere around 24x36 a frame stops being a decorative object and becomes a structural one. The moulding has to resist its own weight, the glazing becomes genuinely heavy, and the wall fixing moves from an afterthought to the most important decision in the project.

## Where the threshold is

There is no official line, but the practical one is where these four things change:

The glazing is doing most of that. Glass weighs roughly 2.5 times what acrylic does for the same sheet, and the difference grows with area. At 40x60 the glass alone is over 20 pounds.

## Choose acrylic, and know its downsides

For anything above 24x36 the recommendation is straightforward: use acrylic.

**Why:** it weighs 40% of what glass does, it does not shatter, and it survives the handling that assembling a large frame requires. A 36x48 glass sheet held at the edges flexes visibly and can break in your hands.

**What you give up:** acrylic scratches. It also attracts dust electrostatically, so it needs an anti-static cleaner rather than a wipe, and it must never meet ammonia-based glass cleaner, which crazes it permanently.

**The exception:** an original artwork of real value, in a stable location, hung into structure, where the scratch resistance and marginally better clarity of glass genuinely matter. Even then, museum-grade acrylic exists and is what most institutions actually use for large pieces, for exactly the reasons above.

## Moulding: depth matters more than width

A large frame fails at the corners, and it fails because the moulding is not rigid enough.

Think of each rail as a beam. Its stiffness rises with the **cube** of its depth and only linearly with its width. A moulding that is two inches wide and half an inch deep is far floppier than one an inch wide and an inch deep, despite looking more substantial from the front.

Practical guidance:

Corners need reinforcement beyond glue. V-nails or splines, not staples. On very large frames — over about 40 inches on the long edge — a cross-brace or a strainer at the back is worth adding: a length of timber spanning the frame internally, screwed to the back of the moulding, which stops the frame racking into a parallelogram over time.

## Backing and bowing

A large print bowing inside its frame is almost always a backing failure.

A 30x40 sheet of corrugated card has essentially no rigidity across its span. It sags, the print follows it, and the centre of the print ends up touching the glazing — which in a humid room is how prints bond to glass permanently.

Use hardboard, MDF, or a thick foam-centred board. The board should be held under gentle pressure by the frame's flexible points, not floating loose.

## Wall fixings, in order of strength

Two rules that prevent accidents:

**Use two fixings.** Not for load sharing alone — a single fixing lets a wide frame rotate, and levelling it becomes a permanent chore. Two fixings, spaced about a third of the frame width either side of centre, hold it square.

**Rate for three times the weight.** Fixings fail progressively as drywall crumbles around them, not suddenly at their rated load. A 20-pound frame wants 60 pounds of rated capacity spread across the fixings.

Where a stud is available, use it. A stud finder costs less than a picture frame and eliminates the entire question.

## Matting at large sizes

Matting a large print grows the frame quickly:

Beyond about 30x40 the matted version becomes a custom frame, a custom mat, an oversize glazing sheet and a genuine freight charge. Most large prints are therefore framed full-bleed, and that is a reasonable default rather than a compromise — large images generally have enough presence not to need a border.

## Building versus buying

Large ready-made frames carry a real premium, and oversize shipping on top of it. Building from [moulding](/guides/picture-frame-moulding) is frequently cheaper, sometimes substantially.

What you need is a saw that will cut long stock accurately — a mitre saw with a stand and support wings, not a saw balanced on a workbench — and clamps long enough to span the frame. ## Getting a large frame into a room

Worth thinking about before ordering: a 40x60 frame is five feet on the long edge and does not go round a tight staircase turn or through a narrow doorway at an angle.

Measure the route as well as the wall. Some large frames ship flat-packed as four lengths precisely because assembled ones cannot be delivered to upper floors, and that is a reason to prefer them rather than a drawback.

A mat is the cheapest thing in framing that makes the largest visible difference. It is also the part people get wrong most often, usually by buying a mat described by the wrong one of its two dimensions.

## The two numbers on every mat

Every mat has an **outside size** and an **opening size**, and they do different jobs.

The outside size must equal the frame size. A mat for a 16x20 frame is cut 16x20 on the outside, so it sits in the rabbet exactly as the glazing does.

The opening size describes the **artwork**, not the hole. A mat listed with an 11x14 opening is designed to display an 11x14 print. The hole physically cut in it is smaller — about 10.5 x 13.5 inches — so that a quarter inch of mat overlaps the print on each side and holds it.

Get these the wrong way round and you buy a mat that is either too small for the frame or too large for the picture. It is by far the most common ordering error.

These are the pairings you can buy off a shelf. Anything else is a custom cut, which at a framer costs perhaps fifteen to forty dollars depending on size and board, and takes a few days.

## Choosing a border width

The border is the design decision. Some working rules that hold up:

**Two to three inches for most things.** Below about 1.5 inches the mat reads as a manufacturing tolerance rather than a choice. Above about four inches it starts to dominate, which is occasionally what you want and usually not.

**Wider than the moulding.** If the frame's face is 1.5 inches and the mat border is 1 inch, the two compete and the frame wins. The mat should be the wider of the two, generally by a factor of at least 1.5.

**Scale with the artwork, not linearly.** A 5x7 wants roughly 1.5 inches; an 11x14 wants 2.5 to 3; a 24x36 wants 3 to 4. Border width grows more slowly than artwork size.

**Bigger borders for smaller, denser images.** A small etching with fine detail benefits from a lot of empty space around it. A bold graphic poster does not.

## Weighted mats

Cut a mat with a perfectly even border and hang it, and the image will appear to sit slightly low. This is a genuine optical effect, not a mounting error — the eye reads the visual centre of a rectangle as being above its geometric centre.

The fix is a **weighted** or **bottom-weighted** mat: the bottom border is cut a quarter to half an inch wider than the top and sides. On a 16x20 mat with an 11x14 opening, that means 2.5 inches at the top and sides and 2.875 at the bottom.

Almost all professionally cut mats are weighted. Almost no ready-made mats are, which is one of the quiet reasons a custom mat looks better even when nobody can say why.

## Board types and why they matter

**Standard paper mat board** is wood pulp with a decorative surface paper. It is cheap and it is acidic. Over ten to twenty years the acid migrates into whatever it touches, leaving a distinct brown line — "mat burn" — along the edge of the artwork. For a poster you will replace, that is fine.

**Acid-free / conservation board** is buffered to neutral pH and will not burn artwork. It costs a little more and should be the default for anything you would be sorry to damage.

**Cotton rag / museum board** is made from cotton fibre rather than wood pulp, is inherently acid-free, and holds its colour indefinitely. This is what galleries use. It costs perhaps two to three times standard board and is worth it for original work.

**Thickness** is given in ply. 4-ply is the standard 1.4 mm. 8-ply is 2.8 mm and shows a substantially deeper bevel where the window is cut, which is the single most obvious visual signal of an expensive frame. It also gives more clearance between artwork and glass, which is genuinely useful for anything with texture.

## Double and triple mats

A double mat is two boards stacked, the lower cut slightly larger so a narrow strip shows inside the opening. That strip — the reveal — is normally an eighth to a quarter of an inch.

Used well, the inner mat picks up a colour that already exists in the artwork and quietly reinforces it. Used badly, it introduces a colour the artwork does not contain and fights it. The rule that keeps you out of trouble: the outer mat is neutral, the inner mat is drawn from the image.

Triple mats exist. They are almost always too much.

## Colour

Off-white and warm white do the overwhelming majority of framing work, for a reason that is not fashion: a near-white mat separates the artwork from the wall without adding a colour of its own, and it will still look right in fifteen years.

Bright white is harsher than people expect and can make a photographic print with warm tones look muddy by comparison. Black mats work for high-contrast monochrome work and almost nothing else. Coloured mats are best deployed as the inner mat of a double.

If you cannot decide, buy off-white. Nobody has ever regretted an off-white mat.

## Cutting your own

A mat cutter is a straight guide with an angled blade holder that cuts a clean 45-degree bevel. A basic hand cutter costs about the same as four custom mats and pays for itself quickly if you frame regularly.

The technique in short:

1. Cut the outside of the board to the frame size, squarely.
2. Mark the opening on the **back** of the board, with the bottom border wider if you are weighting it.
3. Set the blade depth to just barely cut through — too deep and the bevel tears at the corners.
4. Cut each side with the guide, starting and stopping a fraction beyond each corner mark so the corners release cleanly.
5. Do not force a partly cut corner. Finish it with a fresh blade from the back.

The commonest beginner faults are a blunt blade, which crushes rather than cuts, and overshooting the corners, which leaves visible nicks on the face. Both are practice problems rather than equipment problems.

## Mounting the artwork behind the mat

The mat holds the artwork visually; it should not be the only thing holding it physically. Attach the artwork to the backing board — or hinge it to the back of the mat — using archival hinging tape or photo corners along the top edge only, so the paper is free to move with humidity. Never tape all four sides, and never use ordinary household tape, which yellows, hardens and stains through.

Glazing is the part of a frame people think least about and pay most for. It is also the part that decides whether the artwork survives twenty years on a wall.

## The two families

Everything sold as picture frame glazing is either **glass** or **acrylic**, and the trade-off between them is almost entirely about weight and breakage.

Acrylic is sold under trade names including Plexiglas, Perspex and Lucite. All are the same polymer — polymethyl methacrylate — with different manufacturers behind them. The meaningful distinction is between **cast** acrylic, which is optically superior and slightly harder, and **extruded**, which is cheaper and marginally softer.

The one material to avoid is **styrene**, the very thin plastic sheet supplied with the cheapest ready-made frames. It scratches from dusting, yellows within a few years, and is noticeably wavy. If a large frame is unexpectedly light and the glazing flexes easily, it is styrene.

## Choosing by size

The decision is essentially settled by dimensions.

**Up to 11x14:** glass. Light enough not to matter, and the scratch resistance is a genuine advantage on a frame that gets handled.

**16x20 to 20x30:** either. Glass is fine on a solid wall fixing; acrylic makes sense if the frame will move, ship, or hang above furniture.

**24x36 and above:** acrylic, unless there is a compelling reason. A 30x40 sheet of glass weighs around ten pounds, is awkward to carry, flexes under its own weight, and produces genuinely dangerous fragments if it goes.

**Anywhere a child sleeps or plays, and anywhere above a bed or sofa:** acrylic, at any size.

**Anything being posted or couriered:** acrylic. Glass in transit is a coin flip.

## The four glass grades

Beyond plain glass, three upgrades are sold, and they solve different problems.

### Clear float glass

The default. Around 45% UV transmission blocked, a faint green cast from its iron content, and full reflectivity. Cheap, hard, and perfectly adequate for reproductions and posters.

### Low-iron glass

Chemically the same, with the iron reduced so the green cast disappears. The difference is subtle in isolation and obvious side by side, particularly on artwork with large white areas. A modest premium; worth it for photographic prints and anything with delicate paper tone.

### UV-filtering glazing

Blocks 97% or more of ultraviolet light. This is the upgrade that actually preserves artwork. Light damage to paper and pigment is cumulative and irreversible — a print in a bright room fades measurably over a decade — and UV glazing is the only glazing feature that meaningfully slows it.

It does not solve everything. Visible light also fades pigment, and no glazing stops that. Do not hang irreplaceable work in direct sun regardless of what is in front of it.

### Museum / anti-reflective glass

An optical coating on both faces reduces reflection from roughly 8% to under 1%, alongside UV filtering. The effect is startling: the glass reads as absent. It is the most expensive glazing available by a wide margin and the correct answer for original artwork in a well-lit room. For a poster it is simply money.

## Non-glare glass: the honest assessment

Non-glare glass is etched on one surface so that reflections scatter rather than mirror. It is cheap, widely stocked, and often the default in ready-made frames.

It works, and it costs you something. The etching also scatters the light coming *from* the artwork, which softens fine detail and adds a faint milky haze. Crucially, the effect gets worse with distance: pressed almost against a document, non-glare glass looks fine; separated from the artwork by an 8-ply mat, it visibly blurs it.

Where it is right: documents, certificates and text-heavy pieces in corridors and offices with overhead lighting, especially behind thin or no matting.

Where it is wrong: photographs, anything with fine detail, anything behind a thick mat, and anything where the tonal subtlety is the point. For those, the better answer to reflections is anti-reflective coated glazing, or moving the frame.

## Cutting and sourcing

Framing shops, glaziers and many hardware stores will cut picture glass to size for a few dollars a sheet. Ask specifically for 2mm picture glass — the 4mm glass sold for windows is unnecessarily heavy and will not fit a standard rabbet.

Take the frame with you if you can, or the exact rabbet measurement. Glass should be cut about a sixteenth of an inch under the nominal size in each direction so it drops in without binding.

Acrylic is easier to source and can be cut at home with a scoring tool and a straightedge: score repeatedly along a line, then snap over an edge. Leave the protective film on both faces until the moment of assembly.

## Cleaning, without ruining anything

Two rules cover almost every mistake.

**Spray the cloth, never the frame.** Liquid sprayed at a frame runs down the glass, past the rabbet, and onto the mat and artwork, where it leaves a tide line you cannot remove.

**Never use ammonia-based cleaner on acrylic.** Standard blue glass cleaner crazes acrylic — producing a network of fine surface cracks — permanently and often within a single cleaning. Use a dedicated plastic cleaner, or plain water on a microfibre cloth.

For glass, a microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water handles almost everything; a drop of isopropyl alcohol deals with fingerprints. Paper towel is abrasive enough to leave fine scratches on acrylic and leaves lint on glass.

## Keeping artwork off the glazing

Paper and glass in a humid room will eventually stick to each other, and photographic emulsion does it faster. Separating them afterwards is a conservation job with a poor success rate.

The gap is provided by either a [mat](/guides/picture-frame-mat-sizes), which is the usual and best solution, or by clear plastic **spacers** — thin strips that sit in the rabbet at the frame's edge and hold the glazing a fraction of an inch proud of the artwork. Spacers are what you use when the design calls for no visible border, as in a [float frame](/guides/float-and-floater-frames).

Pressing artwork directly against glazing with nothing between them is the single most common cause of avoidable damage in home framing.

# The best wood for picture frames

Wood choice for a picture frame is three separate questions wearing one coat: how it machines, how it finishes, and how much it moves. Species that excel at one often fail at another, which is why professional moulding stock is dominated by timbers nobody outside the trade has heard of.

## What a frame actually asks of wood

**Stability.** Wood expands and contracts across the grain with humidity. A mitred corner joins end grain to end grain, which is the weakest glue joint in woodworking, and it is loaded directly by that movement. Species that move a lot open their corners first.

**Clean machining.** A frame is 45-degree cuts and a rabbet. Wood that tears out at the cut, or burns under a blade, produces mitres that never close properly.

**Finish behaviour.** Some woods take stain evenly. Some blotch. Some have grain so open that paint sinks into it and needs filling.

**Dent resistance.** Frames get handled, stacked and knocked. Soft woods record every one of those events.

## The species, ranked by job

### For painted frames: poplar

Poplar is the professional default for painted work and deserves it. It is cheap, widely available, dimensionally stable, has fine even grain with no open pores, and takes paint with almost no preparation. It cuts and routs cleanly without burning.

Its weaknesses are cosmetic. Raw poplar is pale with green and grey streaks that look unattractive, and it stains unevenly. Neither matters under paint.

### For stained frames: ash and red oak

Both are hard, strong, widely available and have pronounced grain that stain emphasises rather than muddies. Ash is slightly lighter in tone and has a straighter, more even grain pattern; red oak has a stronger cathedral figure and very open pores that a grain filler will smooth if you want a glass-flat finish.

Both machine well with a sharp blade and hold a crisp rabbet. Both are considerably harder on tooling than poplar.

### For a fine finish: maple and cherry

Hard maple is dense, close-grained, dent-resistant and extremely stable. It takes a clear finish beautifully. It blotches badly under stain unless you use a conditioner first, and it is hard enough that dull tooling will burn it.

Cherry needs no stain at all — it darkens to a deep reddish brown on its own over a few years — and machines like a dream. It is expensive, and the colour change means a cherry frame will not match a cherry frame made three years later.

### For the wood as the feature: walnut

American black walnut is the best-looking common framing timber and the one to use when the moulding is meant to be noticed. It is stable, machines cleanly, and needs nothing beyond an oil finish. It is also two to four times the price of oak, which is why it tends to appear as narrow profiles.

### For rustic and utility: pine

Pine is cheap, light, soft and everywhere. Its problem is the huge density difference between its soft early wood and hard latewood: it dents from a fingernail, stains blotchily, and tears out at the mitre unless the blade is sharp.

For painted shop fittings, temporary frames and deliberately rustic work it is entirely reasonable. For a frame with a fine finish it is a false economy — the labour is the same as for poplar and the result is worse.

### The trade timbers: obeche, ayous, ramin

Commercial moulding is largely made from tropical hardwoods most people never see as boards: obeche, ayous, ramin, jelutong. They are chosen for exactly the qualities framing needs — very straight grain, uniform density, excellent stability, clean machining, low weight — and they are almost always painted, gilded or wrapped rather than left visible.

If you are buying [ready-made moulding](/guides/picture-frame-moulding) by the foot rather than milling your own, this is most likely what you are getting.

## Woods to avoid

**Beech** is hard and machines well but moves more with humidity than almost any other common hardwood. Mitres in beech open.

**Unseasoned anything.** Wood bought at 15% moisture content and worked immediately will shrink after assembly and open every corner. Let stock acclimatise in the room where the frame will live for at least a week.

**Highly figured stock** — burl, crotch, heavy curl — looks spectacular and is unstable and prone to tear-out at exactly the 45-degree cut a frame needs. Save it for panels.

**Plywood edge-on.** The layers show at the mitre and no finish disguises them.

## MDF and the engineered options

MDF deserves a fairer hearing than it usually gets. It has no grain, so nothing telegraphs through paint; it is dimensionally stable in all directions; it machines to a razor-sharp profile; and it takes a sprayed finish better than any solid timber. A great many high-quality painted mouldings are MDF, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Its limits are real: it cannot be stained, it is heavy for its strength, its edges are fragile until sealed, and it swells irreversibly if it gets wet. It also holds a screw poorly, so hanging hardware needs to be positioned carefully.

## Grain direction and stock selection

Two details that matter more than species.

**Quartersawn is more stable than flatsawn.** Quartersawn boards — those where the growth rings run roughly perpendicular to the face — move about half as much across their width as flatsawn ones. For frame stock this directly translates into corners that stay closed. Quartersawn oak and ash are widely available and worth seeking out.

**Cut the whole frame from one board.** Two rails from one board and two from another will move at different rates and finish to slightly different colours. Buy a single length long enough for all four sides plus waste, and mark the order of the cuts.

## Sizing the stock

Before the rabbet is cut, a working guide:

The rabbet takes roughly 3/8 inch of depth and 3/8 inch of width out of the back corner, which needs to be deep enough to hold glazing, mat, artwork and backing — about a quarter of an inch of contents at minimum, and half an inch if you are matting generously.

Moulding is the frame. Everything else in the assembly — glazing, mat, backing — is bought by size, but the moulding is bought by the foot, chosen by profile, and is what determines whether the finished object looks like furniture or like packaging.

## Reading a moulding specification

A supplier's listing gives four numbers, and each one decides something.

**Face width** is how wide the frame looks from the front. This is the primary design number.

**Height** or **depth** is how far the moulding stands off the wall.

**Rabbet depth** is how much room there is inside for contents. This is the number that determines whether your frame will actually close.

**Rabbet width** is how far the moulding overlaps the contents — usually a quarter to three eighths of an inch. This is why glazing and mats are cut a fraction under the nominal size.

A typical listing might read: face 1.5", height 0.875", rabbet 0.5" x 0.375". That describes a frame an inch and a half wide on the face, standing seven eighths of an inch proud, able to hold half an inch of contents, overlapping them by three eighths.

## Rabbet depth is the constraint nobody checks

Add up what has to fit inside:

A single-matted print therefore needs about 0.26 inches; a double-matted one about 0.32; and a stretched canvas needs three quarters of an inch or more on its own. A quarter-inch rabbet, which is common on decorative mouldings, will not close over a double mat.

When a rabbet is too shallow there are two honest fixes: deepen it with a router or a table saw before assembly, or use a **frame extender** strip glued to the back. Forcing the backing in and hoping is not a fix; it bows the artwork against the glazing.

## Profiles and what they do

The cross-section of the face is not decoration alone. It directs the eye.

**Flat.** A plain rectangular face. Neutral, modern, and the most forgiving profile for contemporary work. Reads as a border rather than a frame.

**Scoop.** Concave, sloping down toward the artwork. The classic gallery profile — it physically funnels attention inward and gives depth without ornament.

**Cove.** Concave sloping the other way, rising toward the outer edge. Creates a sense of a window looking through.

**Ogee.** An S-curve. The traditional profile of period framing, and the base shape underneath most ornate gilt work.

**Cushion.** Convex, bulging outward. Soft and rounded; suits oil paintings and reads as older.

**Reverse.** Highest at the inner edge, sloping away outward. Unusual, quite assertive, and effective at making a small artwork feel more important.

As a rule, the profile should oppose the artwork's character rather than echo it. A busy ornate frame around a busy image is exhausting; a flat frame around a densely detailed etching gives it somewhere to breathe.

## How much to buy

The arithmetic is straightforward and people still get it wrong, because a mitre consumes material at both ends of every rail.

For a frame of width W and height H, in moulding of face width F:

**Total length = 2(W + H) + 8F + waste**

The `8F` term is the four corners, each of which needs F extra on both meeting rails.

Worked example, an 11x14 frame in 2-inch moulding:

- Sides: 2 × (11 + 14) = 50 inches
- Corners: 8 × 2 = 16 inches
- Subtotal: 66 inches
- Waste allowance (10%): 7 inches
- **Buy 73 inches — call it 6 feet 6.**

For a 24x36 frame in 2-inch moulding: 120 + 16 = 136 inches plus waste, so 12 feet 6. Note that suppliers sell in fixed stick lengths, usually 8 or 9 feet, so a 24x36 frame needs two sticks and leaves a substantial offcut. That offcut is exactly why frame shops accumulate a scrap bin, and why asking for offcuts is sometimes worth doing.

## Length, chop and join

Suppliers sell the same moulding three ways, and the price differences are instructive.

**Length.** Full sticks, cheapest per foot, you cut everything. This is the right choice if you have a mitre saw you trust and are making several frames.

**Chop.** The supplier cuts your four pieces to exact size with the mitres already made. You glue and join them. Costs perhaps 30 to 50% more than length, and removes the single hardest step. For one frame in an expensive moulding, chop is usually the smart purchase — a botched mitre in walnut costs more than the chop fee.

**Join.** Arrives assembled and ready to fill. Most expensive, and worth it for large frames where clamping is genuinely difficult.

## Where to buy

**Framing wholesalers** carry hundreds of profiles and will often sell to the public, either by the stick or as a chop. This is where the real range is.

**Independent frame shops** will sometimes sell length or chop from their own stock, and some will sell offcuts cheaply. Worth asking.

**Online moulding suppliers** ship by the stick with an oversize-freight charge that makes small orders uneconomic and large ones fine.

**Home improvement stores** sell architectural trim, not frame moulding. It has no rabbet. You can make a frame from it by cutting a rabbet yourself on a table saw, and people do, but you are adding a machining operation and the proportions of door casing rarely suit a picture.

## Choosing a width

The moulding should sit in proportion to the artwork and, if there is one, to the mat.

And one relationship that matters more than the absolute number: if there is a mat, the mat border should be wider than the moulding face. When the moulding is wider, the frame reads as the subject and the artwork as an inset. That is occasionally the intention — heavy ornate framing of small oils does it deliberately — but it is almost never what someone framing a photograph wants.

# Gold picture frames

Gold has been the default frame finish for four hundred years, for a practical reason as much as a decorative one: it reflects light back into the artwork without adding a colour of its own. Modern gold frames span everything from genuinely gilded reproductions of period mouldings to matte gold paint on MDF, and the difference in price is a factor of fifty.

## The finishes, from best to cheapest

### Water gilding

The traditional method, and the finest. Layers of gesso are built up over the moulding and sanded smooth. A coloured clay **bole** — traditionally red, sometimes yellow or grey — is applied over the gesso. Gold leaf, hammered to a few microns thick, is laid onto the wetted bole, where surface tension pulls it down.

Once dry, it can be **burnished** with an agate stone to a genuine mirror finish. Water gilding is the only technique that produces that depth, and it is the reason antique frames have a quality modern paint cannot reproduce.

It is labour-intensive, skilled, and expensive.

### Oil gilding

Leaf laid onto an oil-based **size** rather than a clay bole. It cannot be burnished, so it produces a softer, matte finish. It is more durable than water gilding and works on surfaces that water gilding cannot handle.

Frequently the two are combined on one frame: burnished water gilding on the raised elements, matte oil gilding in the recesses, which produces contrast between highlight and shadow.

### Imitation leaf

Sheets of brass or aluminium alloy rather than gold, applied by the same methods. Visually convincing when new and much cheaper. The catch is that base metals tarnish — imitation gold leaf darkens and can develop a greenish cast over years unless it is sealed under lacquer, and the lacquer itself yellows.

### Bronze powder and metallic paint

Powdered metal in a binder, brushed or sprayed. This is what most inexpensive gold frames are. It never has the depth of leaf because it has no reflective continuity — it is a scattering of particles rather than a surface. It also tarnishes.

Modern metallic paints have improved considerably, and a well-applied paint over a red-brown base coat looks convincing at normal viewing distance.

### Gold-toned metal and foil-wrapped

Aluminium or steel with a gold-anodised or coated finish, and MDF wrapped in printed gold foil. Both are entirely modern products with no pretension to gilding, and for a flat contemporary profile they look perfectly good and cost very little.

## Telling real gilding from imitation

**Look for the leaf joins.** Gold leaf comes in squares of about 3.4 inches. Applied to a moulding, the squares overlap slightly and the joins are usually faintly visible as a grid under raking light. Sprayed or painted finishes have no such structure.

**Look for tarnish.** Real gold does not tarnish, ever. Darkening, greening, or a dull brown cast means base metal — imitation leaf or bronze powder.

**Look at the wear.** On genuine water gilding, worn edges reveal the red clay bole beneath, which is a distinctive warm terracotta. On painted frames, wear reveals whatever the base coat was, usually white or grey.

**Look at the recesses.** Gilding is applied by hand and tends to be slightly less perfect in deep recesses. Sprayed finishes are uniformly even everywhere, which is itself a tell.

## What artwork gold suits

**Works well with:** oil paintings, especially anything before about 1900; academic and classical work; warm-toned photographs, sepia and platinum prints; botanical and natural history prints; anything with gold, ochre or warm brown already in the image.

**Works badly with:** cool-toned contemporary photography; high-contrast black and white, where gold introduces a warmth that fights the image; graphic and typographic work; anything where the artwork is already visually busy, since ornate gold competes for attention.

**The reliable exception:** a narrow, flat, matte gold profile — no ornament, half an inch to an inch wide — works with almost anything, including work that a wide gilt frame would destroy. It is currently one of the most common gallery framing choices for contemporary photography.

## Ornate versus plain

The distinction matters more than the colour.

**Ornate gold** — carved or composition ornament, swept corners, deep profiles — belongs with period artwork and in rooms with architectural detail of their own. In a plain modern room it reads as costume.

**Plain gold** — flat, scoop or simple cove profiles with no ornament — is contemporary, versatile and hard to get wrong. Most of the gold framing that looks current is in this category.

If you are choosing a gold frame and are not certain, choose plain and narrow.

## Matting with gold

The mat sits between the frame and the artwork and has to work with both.

**Off-white or warm cream** is the safe answer. It shares the frame's warmth and does not compete.

**Bright white is the common mistake.** Against gold, a cool white looks bluish and makes the gold look yellow rather than golden. The two fight quietly and the result looks slightly off without an obvious reason.

**A thin gold or ochre inner mat** in a double mat is an effective detail — it echoes the frame at the artwork's edge and ties the two together across the width of the outer mat.

**Black mats with gold frames** work only for high-contrast graphic work and are otherwise heavy.

## Caring for a gilded frame

The single most important rule: **do not clean gilding with anything wet.**

Water dissolves the animal glue in the gesso and lifts the bole, taking the gold with it. Solvents strip both. Commercial metal polish removes the gold entirely.

Correct care is a soft, dry, natural-bristle brush — a clean makeup brush works — used gently to lift dust from the recesses. That is all a genuinely gilded frame should ever receive.

Modern painted or foil-wrapped gold frames are far more robust and tolerate a barely damp cloth, though they should still be dried immediately.

## Restoring and touching up

Losses in gilding — chips, worn corners, missing composition ornament — are conservation work and can be genuinely expensive on a valuable frame. For a decorative frame, gilding wax rubbed sparingly into the loss and buffed is a quick and surprisingly convincing repair.

For a frame you want to make gold from scratch: base coat in a red-brown, then gilding wax or metallic paint applied unevenly so the base shows at the edges and in the recesses. That deliberate imperfection is what makes it read as gold rather than as gold paint. # Black picture frames

Black is the default and it deserves to be. It works with more artwork than any other finish, it never looks dated, and it is the only colour that reliably unifies a mixed collection. It is also the finish most likely to be chosen without thought, which is where it goes wrong.

## Why black works

Three reasons, and they are practical rather than aesthetic.

**It is a boundary, not a colour.** Black reads as an edge — the point where the artwork stops and the wall begins. It adds no hue that could clash with anything in the image.

**It handles mixed collections.** On a wall of unrelated artwork, matching black frames supply the consistency that makes the group read as intentional. No other finish does this as reliably.

**It suits contemporary rooms.** White walls, minimal architecture and modern furniture were the context black framing was standardised for, and most homes now look more like that than like the rooms gilt framing was designed for.

## The finishes

### Matte black

The gallery default. It absorbs light, has no reflection to distract from the artwork, and recedes visually so the frame stops being noticed within seconds.

It also marks. Matte paint shows scuffs, and any attempt to clean it with a damp cloth leaves visible streaks that only disappear when the whole surface is dry-buffed. Handle by the edges.

### Satin black

A slight sheen, which is a genuine compromise. It resists marking better than matte, it does not draw attention like gloss, and it has enough surface to read as a finished object rather than a painted one. For a frame that will be handled — a desk frame, something that moves between rooms — satin is the sensible choice.

### Gloss black

Reflective, formal, and assertive. It draws the eye to the frame rather than through it, which is occasionally the intention with graphic and typographic work.

Practical problems: gloss black shows every fingerprint, every speck of dust, and every scratch. It also reflects the room, so a gloss frame opposite a window has a bright rectangle across it for part of the day.

### Stained black

Wood stained rather than painted, so the grain reads through. Warmer and less absolute than paint, and it suits rooms with a lot of natural timber. Oak and ash take a black stain particularly well because their open grain holds the pigment and shows as texture.

### Black metal

Anodised or powder-coated aluminium section. Thin, crisp, cool and slightly industrial. It is the standard for photographic exhibition framing, and it looks entirely different from black wood at the same width — harder, more precise, less domestic.

## Where black is the wrong answer

Black is high contrast against a wall and against artwork. Where the artwork is itself low in contrast, black overpowers it.

**Watercolours and pastels.** Soft, pale, low-contrast media. A black frame turns the artwork into a faint smudge inside a hard rectangle. Natural wood, off-white or a pale grey frame suits them far better.

**Delicate botanical and antique prints.** Same reasoning. These were historically framed in gilt or in stained fruitwood for a reason.

**Dark or predominantly black artwork.** Without a light mat between them, a black frame and a dark image merge and the artwork loses its edge entirely. If you want black on black, a white or grey mat is not optional.

**Rooms with dark walls.** A black frame on a dark wall disappears, taking the artwork's boundary with it. Use a lighter frame or a wide light mat.

## Matting with black

**White or off-white** for almost everything. The mat separates the artwork from the black edge and gives the eye a resting place before the image starts. This is the classic and near-universal combination for monochrome photography.

**Off-white over bright white** in most cases. Bright white against black is very high contrast and can be harsh; a warm off-white softens the transition without muddying it.

**Grey mats** work well with black frames and colour photography, and are a good option when white feels too stark for the room.

**Black mats** with black frames should be used sparingly. They work for very high-key images — a mostly white photograph, a line drawing on white paper — where the artwork itself supplies all the light. For anything else the effect is a black hole.

## Width matters more than colour

Most complaints about black frames being "heavy" are actually about width. A three-inch black moulding is heavy; a half-inch one is not, and the colour is identical.

For a general rule:

Black frames can be narrower than equivalent light-coloured ones and still read as a defined edge, because the contrast does the work the width would otherwise have to.

## Black on a gallery wall

If you are hanging a mixed collection and want it to work with minimal effort, use identical black frames throughout with identical off-white mats.

This is not a lack of imagination; it is the single most reliable framing decision available. The artwork provides all the variation, the framing provides all the consistency, and the result looks curated rather than accumulated. ## Cleaning

**Matte:** dry microfibre only. Anything damp leaves streaks that need the whole surface buffed dry to remove.

**Satin and gloss:** a barely damp microfibre cloth, followed immediately by a dry one. Never leave moisture sitting on a painted frame, and never use solvent cleaners, which soften paint.

**Metal:** as above, and avoid abrasive cloths — powder-coated aluminium scratches to bare metal and the scratch is bright and permanent.

## Buying black frames for a set

If you are buying several black frames to hang together, buy them in one order from one supplier.

"Black" is not a single colour in manufacturing. Different production runs vary in warmth and in sheen, and two nominally identical matte black frames from different batches can be visibly different hanging six inches apart. The variation is small enough to be invisible in isolation and obvious side by side.

This applies across sizes too. If a range offers 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20 in the same finish, they are usually made together and match. Frames from different ranges in the same shop frequently do not.

# Vintage and antique picture frames

An antique frame is a piece of furniture that happens to be shaped like a border. Understanding how they were made explains almost everything about how to identify them, what they are worth, and how not to ruin them.

## How old is old

The trade convention: **antique** means 100 years or more; **vintage** covers roughly 30 to 100 years. Retail uses both words to mean "styled to look old", so neither term tells you anything without evidence.

The evidence is on the back.

## Reading the back of a frame

Almost every reliable indicator of age is invisible from the front.

**Joints.** Hand-cut mitres are rarely perfect and often show slight variation between corners. Nineteenth-century frames were commonly joined with glue and hand-driven nails, sometimes with a spline. V-nails and staples are twentieth-century, and machine-perfect corners suggest modern production.

**Nails.** Square-section cut nails were standard until roughly 1890. Round wire nails came in after. A frame with square nails is genuinely old; one with modern round wire brads is not, unless it has been repaired.

**Wood movement.** Old wood has shrunk across the grain over decades. This shows as slightly open mitres — the corner gaps a fraction — and as ridges where the grain has risen. Uniform, tight corners on an apparently old frame usually mean a reproduction.

**Backing.** Original backing boards are often thin wood, old cardboard or, on paintings, nothing at all. Original glazier's points are hand-cut and irregular.

**Labels and inscriptions.** Framer's labels, exhibition stickers, chalk inventory numbers and pencil notes are all common on old frames and are worth photographing before anything is disturbed. They frequently establish provenance.

**Dust and grime patterns.** Genuine age produces dirt that accumulates in recesses and is absent on raised, handled surfaces. Artificially aged frames often have wear applied evenly, or worse, wear in places that would never wear in use.

## What frames were made of

### Carved wood

The oldest and most valuable method. Ornament cut directly into the timber, usually a fine-grained hardwood, then gessoed and gilded. Carving shows tool marks and small asymmetries; each element differs slightly from its neighbour.

### Composition ornament

From the late eighteenth century, ornament was increasingly made from **compo** — a putty of chalk, hide glue, rosin and linseed oil, pressed warm into carved wooden moulds and applied to a plain frame while pliable.

Compo made ornate framing affordable and it is what the overwhelming majority of nineteenth-century decorated frames are. It also has a characteristic failure mode: as the linseed oil oxidises over decades the compo becomes brittle and shrinks slightly, producing fine **craquelure** across the ornament and eventual chipping, usually at corners and high points.

Repeating elements that are identical to each other indicate compo. Repeating elements with visible individual variation indicate carving.

### Gesso and bole

Under the gilding is gesso — chalk in animal glue, built up in many thin layers and sanded. Under the gold on water-gilded frames is a coloured clay **bole**, traditionally warm red. Where gilding has worn through on genuine period frames, that red shows, and it is one of the most reliable signals of authentic water gilding.

## Valuing one, honestly

Value depends on period, region, maker, condition and above all whether the **original finish survives**.

The point that catches people: a period frame with worn, dirty, original gilding is worth substantially more than the same frame stripped and regilded. Regilding is the most common way an antique frame's value is destroyed, usually by someone trying to improve it.

We cannot value a frame from a description, and neither can anyone else — it needs physical examination by someone who handles them regularly. Auction houses will give an opinion on something they might sell. If you have a frame you suspect is significant, get it looked at before you touch the finish.

## Cleaning and repair

**Cleaning.** A soft, dry, natural-bristle brush. Nothing else. Water dissolves the hide glue in gesso and lifts the bole and gold with it. Solvents strip finishes. Metal polish removes gilding entirely. This is not caution for its own sake — these are single-application, irreversible mistakes.

**Small losses.** Chips in compo can be filled with a modelling compound, sanded to profile, sealed, and toned with gilding wax. Done carefully, a small repair is invisible at normal viewing distance and costs almost nothing.

**Larger losses in repeating ornament.** Take a silicone mould from an intact section of the same run and cast a replacement. This is the standard conservation technique and is well within reach of a patient amateur on a decorative frame.

**Structural failure.** Open corners on an old frame are usually the result of wood movement rather than glue failure, and clamping them shut can crack the gesso across the corner. This is a case for a conservator on anything valuable.

**What not to do:** strip it, sand the finish, repaint it, or apply modern varnish. All four are irreversible and all four reduce value.

## Putting modern artwork in an old frame

This works beautifully and needs adaptation, because old frames were built for a different job.

**Rabbet depth.** Frames made for oil on canvas often have a shallow rabbet, since a stretched canvas sits proud rather than inside. For glazed paper artwork you need depth for glazing, mat, artwork and backing — about a quarter to half an inch. Deepening a rabbet is possible but should be done reversibly and never on anything genuinely valuable.

**Squareness.** Old frames are rarely square. Measure the rabbet at both ends of each side and use the **smallest** figures, and have glazing cut to the measured size rather than to the nominal one.

**Glazing.** Original glass, where it survives, is often thin, wavy and slightly green, and it is worth keeping for its appearance if it is intact. If you need new glazing, acrylic is lighter, which matters because old frames are heavy and their joints are old.

**Isolation.** Do not let modern artwork touch old wood, old backing or old gesso. Use a fresh acid-free backing board and archival mounting so the artwork sits in a modern, inert environment inside an old frame.

## Buying

**Estate sales and auctions** are where genuine frames appear at sensible prices, frequently attached to paintings nobody wants.

**Architectural salvage** yards accumulate frames alongside doors and fittings and often price them as decoration rather than as antiques.

**Specialist frame dealers** carry the good material and price accordingly. They will also tell you what you are looking at, which is worth the premium if you are learning.

**Antique shops** mark up heavily and rarely know framing specifically.

# Float frames and floater frames

Two different things share almost the same name, and confusing them wastes money. A **float frame** shows the edges of a piece of paper. A **floater frame** surrounds a canvas with a gap. Neither can do the other's job.

## Float mounting: showing the artwork's own edge

A conventional mat covers the outer quarter inch of the artwork on every side. Usually that is fine. Sometimes what it covers is the point.

**Deckle edges** on handmade or mould-made paper — the soft, feathered edge produced by the papermaking process — are a mark of quality and were never meant to be hidden.

**Plate marks** on etchings and engravings are the impression the printing plate leaves in the damp paper. Collectors look for them; a mat hides them.

**Printed borders and signatures** in the margin of a print, which are frequently part of the work.

**Torn or irregular edges** on contemporary work, where the edge is a deliberate gesture.

For all of these, a float mount lifts the artwork slightly proud of a backing board so its full outline is visible with a shadow around it. The effect is that the sheet appears to hover.

### How to float mount

1. **Choose the backing.** A rigid, acid-free board — 8-ply mat board, or an archival foam board. It should be cut a little smaller than the frame's rabbet so it sits comfortably inside.
2. **Raise the artwork slightly.** Small pads of foam board or mat board offcuts, glued to the back of the artwork's mount and hidden beneath it, lift the sheet perhaps an eighth of an inch. This is what creates the shadow.
3. **Hinge the artwork** to the raised mount with archival hinges along the **top edge only**, so it can move with humidity.
4. **Add spacers.** Clear plastic strips sit in the rabbet at the frame's perimeter and hold the glazing off the artwork. Without these the glazing rests on the paper and, in humid conditions, bonds to it permanently.
5. **Assemble** glazing, spacers, float-mounted artwork on its backing, then the frame's retaining points.

The two things that go wrong are skipping the spacers, which is a conservation problem, and lifting the artwork too far, which turns a subtle shadow into an obvious platform. An eighth of an inch is plenty.

## Floater frames: for canvas and panel

A floater frame is a completely different object. It is essentially a shallow tray: an L-shaped profile with the upright on the outside, open at the back, deeper than it is wide.

The canvas is attached from **behind**, screwed through the frame's base into the stretcher bars, and sits inside the frame with a deliberate gap of an eighth to a quarter inch all round. There is no glazing, no mat and no backing board.

### Why canvases need this

A conventional frame has a rabbet of a quarter to three eighths of an inch. A stretched canvas is three quarters of an inch deep on standard bars and an inch and a half on gallery-depth ones. It physically will not fit.

The alternatives people try are worse. Removing the glazing and backing from a conventional frame leaves the canvas sitting proud of the frame face, which looks like exactly what it is. Sitting a canvas on top of a frame and screwing through the front is visible from every angle.

The floater is the purpose-built solution, and it is what galleries use.

### Choosing one

**Size by the canvas, not by an opening.** Floater frames are sold as "16x20 floater for a 16x20 canvas". The internal dimension is slightly larger than nominal to create the gap.

**Match or exceed the depth.** The frame must be at least as deep as the stretcher bars. Slightly deeper is good — the canvas sits marginally recessed, which reads as intentional. Shallower means the canvas stands proud, which does not.

**Gap width.** An eighth to a quarter of an inch. Narrower looks like a manufacturing error; wider makes the canvas look adrift.

**Finish inside the gap.** The inner face of the frame is visible through the gap and is part of the design. Black is the usual choice because it reads as shadow. Natural wood and gold are both used deliberately, and a mismatched or unfinished inner face is an immediate tell of a cheap frame.

### Fitting a canvas

Lay the frame face down, place the canvas into it face down, and centre it by eye against the gap on all four sides — measure it rather than trusting the eye, since the gap is small enough that a sixteenth of an inch of error is visible.

Then screw through the frame's base into the stretcher bars, usually two screws per side, using screws short enough not to come through the front of the bar. Some floater frames come with mounting brackets instead, which is easier and equally secure.

## Which to use

The dividing line is simple: if it is paper and needs glazing, you want a float mount. If it is a rigid object that hangs unglazed, you want a floater frame.

## Cost

Float mounting a print costs slightly more than matting one, because spacers and an archival backing are needed and the mounting is more fiddly. It is not a large difference.

Floater frames tend to cost a little more than conventional frames of the same nominal size, since the profile uses more material. But they need no glazing, no mat and no backing board — three things that add up quickly at larger sizes — so a floater-framed canvas is frequently cheaper overall than a conventionally framed print of the same dimensions.

# Acrylic and lucite picture frames

Acrylic appears in framing in two completely different roles: as glazing inside a conventional frame, and as the frame itself. The material is the same; the products have nothing else in common.

## The material

Acrylic is polymethyl methacrylate. Plexiglas, Perspex and Lucite are trade names for it, and the name used tends to indicate the form rather than any chemical difference — "acrylic sheet" for glazing, "lucite" for thick solid blocks and furniture-like objects.

There is one distinction that matters:

**Cast acrylic** is polymerised in a mould. It is optically superior, slightly harder, more chemically resistant, and machines cleanly. This is what quality glazing and block frames are made from.

**Extruded acrylic** is pushed through a die. It is cheaper, slightly softer, more prone to internal stress, and can craze more readily. It is adequate as glazing and is what most inexpensive acrylic sheet is.

**Styrene** is not acrylic at all and is what the cheapest ready-made frames use. It is thin, wavy, scratches from a glance and yellows within a few years. If a frame is unexpectedly light and its glazing flexes easily, it is styrene, and replacing it is a genuine upgrade.

## Acrylic as glazing

Against glass, in the same frame:

The weight difference is the whole argument. Above about 20x30, acrylic is the sensible default, and above 30x40 it is close to the only reasonable choice. It is also the right answer anywhere a fall would be dangerous — above a bed, a cot, a sofa or a desk — and for anything being posted.

What you give up is scratch resistance, and you give up a lot of it. An acrylic-glazed frame dusted weekly with a dry cloth will be visibly hazed within a couple of years. The material demands a microfibre cloth and a plastic-safe cleaner, and rewards being left alone.

**Never use ammonia-based glass cleaner on acrylic.** It causes crazing — a network of fine surface cracks — which is permanent and frequently appears after a single application.

## Acrylic as the frame

### Magnetic block frames

Two thick slabs of clear acrylic, typically 15 to 25mm each, with recessed magnets at the corners. The print sits between them and the magnets clamp it. There is no moulding, no mat and no backing.

The effect is that the photograph appears suspended inside a solid clear block. It reads as contemporary, it works particularly well with photography, and changing the print takes fifteen seconds.

Practical notes: the print must be cut accurately, because its edges are fully visible. The block is heavier than it looks — a 12x16 pair of 20mm slabs is several pounds. And both faces of both slabs scratch, including the ones facing inward, which are effectively impossible to keep pristine over years of print changes.

### Standoff mounts

Not a frame at all. A sheet of acrylic with holes drilled at the corners, mounted to the wall on four metal barrels so it stands perhaps an inch proud. The print is mounted to the back of the acrylic or sandwiched behind it.

The result is a frameless panel casting a shadow on the wall. It suits large photographic work and commercial spaces, and it is entirely dependent on precise drilling — the holes must align with the wall fixings exactly, and acrylic cracks if a bolt is overtightened.

### Box and L-frames

Solid acrylic bent or bonded into an L-shape or an open box that a print sits inside. These are tabletop objects rather than wall frames, and they are the standard for desk photographs in modern offices.

### Acrylic-faced shadow boxes

Deep boxes with an acrylic front, used for objects rather than flat artwork. The acrylic's weight advantage is significant here, since a shadow box is already heavy.

## Where acrylic frames work

**Contemporary photography.** The material has no period associations at all, which means it adds nothing and detracts nothing.

**Rooms where a frame would be one object too many.** Clear acrylic reads as minimal in a way even a thin metal frame does not.

**Colourful or busy artwork** that a coloured frame would fight.

**Children's rooms and above furniture,** for the unbreakability.

## Where they do not

**Traditional and period artwork.** Oils, etchings and antique prints look stranded in acrylic. They were made in a context that assumed a frame with weight.

**Textured artwork.** A magnetic block clamps flat. Anything with impasto, embossing or real dimension cannot go in one.

**Rooms with a lot of direct sun.** Cheap acrylic yellows, and even good acrylic offers no protection against fading from visible light. Use UV-filtering grade and keep it out of direct sun regardless.

**Anywhere it will be handled constantly.** The scratch problem is real and there is no fixing it once done. Light scratches can be polished out of thick cast acrylic with a plastic polish; a hazed thin glazing sheet is simply replaced.

## Buying and cost

Acrylic glazing costs meaningfully more than glass of the same size — typically two to three times for standard grade, and considerably more for UV-filtering and museum grades. That is the price of the weight and safety advantages, and above 24x36 it is worth paying.

Acrylic block frames and standoff mounts are a different tier again. The material is thick, the machining and polishing are precise, and the price reflects it — often several times a conventional frame of the same size.

When buying, check whether the listing says **acrylic** or **styrene**, and whether it says **cast** or **extruded**. Frames that decline to say are usually declining for a reason. ## Polishing out light scratches

Fine scratches in thick cast acrylic can be removed with a plastic polish and a soft cloth, working in small circles until the surface clears. Thin glazing sheet is not worth polishing — replace it instead.

# Gallery wall frames

A gallery wall is one picture made of several. Every decision — sizes, spacing, framing, alignment — is about making a group of separate objects read as a single deliberate thing rather than a wall that accumulated.

## The two things that actually matter

Most gallery wall advice is decoration. Two rules do the real work.

**Something must repeat.** Frame colour, frame size, mat colour, or subject matter — at least one of these has to be consistent across the whole arrangement. If everything varies, the wall reads as accumulation.

**Spacing must be consistent.** Two to three inches between frames, held to across the entire group. Inconsistent spacing is the single most common reason a well-chosen set of pictures looks wrong on a wall, and it is entirely fixable with a tape measure.

Get those two right and almost any arrangement works. Get them wrong and no amount of good artwork rescues it.

## Choosing sizes

Use two or three sizes, repeated, rather than many sizes used once.

A working set that suits most rooms:

The anchor sits slightly off-centre, and everything else arranges around it. Anchoring dead centre produces a symmetrical arrangement, which reads as formal — fine above a bed or a mantel, static elsewhere.

Note that the outside dimensions matter, not the nominal frame sizes. An 11x14 in a wide moulding and an 11x14 in a thin one occupy visibly different amounts of wall. If you are mixing moulding widths, plan from the outside measurements.

## The four layouts that work

### The grid

Identical frames in regular rows and columns. Three by two, three by three, four by two. Even spacing throughout.

This is the foolproof option. It needs no design judgement, it always looks intentional, and it suits sets of related images — a series of prints, one photo shoot, botanical plates. Its only weakness is that it is a little safe.

### The centre line

Frames of varying sizes, all sharing a common horizontal centre line, arranged in a row. The tops and bottoms are irregular; the middle is a straight line.

Very effective along a corridor or above a long sideboard. The shared centre line does the organising, which frees you to mix sizes and orientations freely.

### The rectangle

Frames of varying sizes arranged so the **outer boundary** of the whole group forms a clean rectangle. Internally it is irregular; externally it is a defined shape.

This is the most versatile layout for mixed sizes and the one that most rewards planning on paper. It is also the hardest to improvise, because the outer edge has to come out right and the interior has to fill without awkward gaps.

### The salon wall

A dense, irregular arrangement filling a large area, frames close together, sizes and orientations varied. It comes from nineteenth-century exhibition practice, where paintings were hung floor to ceiling.

It needs volume — fifteen frames or more — and it needs consistent framing to hold it together, usually all-black or all-gold with a single mat colour. Done with ten mismatched frames it looks like a wall that got away from someone.

## Planning it on paper first

This is the step people skip and then regret. It takes an hour and eliminates every subsequent problem.

1. **Trace each frame** onto kraft paper or newspaper and cut out the templates.
2. **Mark the hanging point** on each template — measure from the top of the frame down to where the hook or wire will sit when taut, and mark that point on the paper.
3. **Tape the templates to the wall** with low-tack tape.
4. **Rearrange until it works.** Step back across the room repeatedly. This is where the arrangement actually gets designed, and it costs nothing to change.
5. **Check spacing with a tape measure**, not by eye. Eyes are unreliable at this and consistently make lower gaps look larger than upper ones.
6. **Drill or nail through the paper** at the marked hanging points.
7. **Tear the paper away** and hang.

## Height and relationship to furniture

Treat the entire arrangement as one picture with a single centre.

**Centre height:** 57 to 60 inches from the floor to the centre of the whole group. This is standard gallery eye level and it is lower than most people instinctively hang.

**Above furniture:** leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa or sideboard and the bottom edge of the lowest frame. Less than 6 and the group crowds the furniture; more than 10 and the two stop relating to each other.

**Width relative to furniture:** the arrangement should span roughly two thirds to three quarters of the furniture below it. Narrower looks tentative; wider looks like it is overflowing.

**Staircases:** follow the angle of the stair rather than levelling everything. Keep a consistent perpendicular distance from the stair line to the centre of each frame.

## Frames and mats

**All-matching frames** are the safest choice and never look wrong. Black is the most forgiving; natural wood is warmer and works better in rooms with a lot of white.

**Mixed frames** need a unifying element. The most reliable is a single mat colour throughout — off-white is the default — which reads through the variation in the frames and holds the group together.

**Mat width** should be reasonably consistent in absolute terms, not proportional. If every frame has a 2-inch mat regardless of size, the wall gains a rhythm. If mats scale with the frames, the effect is lost.

**Avoid mixing metal and wood** in the same arrangement unless every frame in the group is doing it deliberately. One aluminium frame in a group of eight wooden ones reads as a mistake.

## Hanging without frustration

- Use D-rings and wire rather than sawtooth hangers, so each frame can slide horizontally to fine-tune spacing after it is on the wall.

- Felt bumpers on the bottom rear corners of every frame. They keep frames parallel to the wall and stop them drifting out of level when a door slams.
- Hang the anchor piece first and work outward from it.

# Digital picture frames

A digital picture frame is a screen that has agreed to behave like an object. The good ones do this convincingly; the bad ones look like a tablet propped on a shelf. The difference is mostly in the display and the housing, and almost none of it is in the megapixel-style numbers on the box.

## How they work

Three components: a screen, a small computer, and a way of getting photos in.

**Loading photos** happens in one of three ways.

*Local media* — an SD card or USB stick. No network, no account, no subscription. Simple and completely reliable, and it means someone has to physically load new photos.

*Wi-Fi with an app* — family members send photos from their phones directly to the frame, wherever it is. This is the reason most digital frames are bought as gifts, and it is genuinely the feature that matters.

*Email or cloud service* — the frame pulls from an address or a linked album. Convenient, and dependent on that service continuing to exist.

**Display** is a standard LCD or IPS panel. IPS is worth having: it holds colour and contrast when viewed from an angle, which matters enormously for something sitting on a sideboard that people walk past rather than sit in front of.

## The specifications that actually matter

**Screen finish.** A glossy screen reflects the room and is unreadable opposite a window. A matte or anti-glare finish is the single biggest difference between a frame that gets looked at and one that gets moved. This is rarely prominent in the specification and always worth finding out.

**Auto-brightness.** A frame at full brightness in a dark room is a lamp. One that dims automatically — and ideally sleeps overnight — is far more livable. For a bedroom, this is essential rather than nice.

**Resolution, in context.** For a 10-inch frame, 1280x800 is adequate and 1920x1200 is good. Beyond that the returns are small at normal viewing distance. Resolution is much less important than screen finish and viewing angle.

**Aspect ratio.** Most frames are 16:10 or 16:9 — television shapes. Phone photos are 4:3 and camera photos are 3:2, so neither fills the screen. The frame either letterboxes them with black bars or crops them. A 4:3 screen displays phone photos properly and is worth seeking out if the photos will mostly come from phones.

**Storage.** 8GB holds several thousand photos. This is almost never the limiting factor.

**The app and any subscription.** Some manufacturers charge for cloud storage or for features beyond a free tier. Others do not. Find out before buying, particularly for a gift — discovering an annual fee two years later is a genuinely unpleasant surprise for the recipient.

## Sizing

Screen sizes are diagonal measurements, which makes them sound larger than the picture is.

Ten inches is the most common choice and works in most rooms. Below eight, individual faces become hard to see from across a room, which defeats the purpose.

## Buying one as a gift

This is what most digital frames are for, and it changes the priorities completely.

The recipient should have to do **nothing** except plug it in. Set it up yourself before wrapping it: connect it to their Wi-Fi if you can, load a few hundred photos, and add the family members who will send more.

Then look for:

- **Remote sending.** The whole point. Family send photos from their phones and the frame updates on its own.
- **Auto-brightness and a sleep schedule.** So it is not glowing at 3am.
- **No subscription.** Or one you pay for permanently and quietly.
- **A simple or absent remote.** Frames with a remote lose the remote. Touch controls or app-only control are more robust.
- **A matte screen.** For an older recipient especially, glare is a real barrier.

What not to prioritise: resolution beyond about 1280x800, storage capacity, and video playback. All are commonly emphasised in marketing and rarely matter in use.

## Where they fall short

**Aspect ratio mismatch** is unavoidable. Screens are television-shaped and photographs are not. Every digital frame either crops or letterboxes, and there is no setting that fixes it.

**Service dependence.** A Wi-Fi frame whose manufacturer discontinues the app becomes a memory-card frame. This has happened repeatedly across the category. A frame that also reads local media has a fallback; one that is cloud-only does not.

**They are still screens.** In a room with a television and several phones, another glowing rectangle is not automatically welcome. Placement matters — a digital frame works best somewhere that has no other screen.

**They do not replace prints.** A printed photograph in a frame is a physical object that carries a different kind of weight. A digital frame shows five hundred photos; a [framed print](/guides/how-to-frame-a-picture) shows one, and says that this one mattered enough to commit to.

## Care

Clean the screen with a dry microfibre cloth, or one barely dampened with water. Never use glass cleaner or alcohol — both damage the anti-glare coating and the damage is permanent.

Keep it out of direct sunlight, which both washes out the display and shortens the panel's life. And if it has a fan or vents, keep them clear; frames that run hot fail early.

## Preparing photos for a digital frame

A little preparation makes a substantial difference to how a digital frame looks in a room.

**Crop to the frame's ratio.** If the frame is 16:10 and your photos are 4:3, every image will either have black bars or be cropped by the frame's own logic. Cropping them yourself takes a few seconds each and puts the decision where it belongs.

**Rotate correctly before uploading.** Some frames read orientation metadata and some do not. A batch of sideways photographs is the most common complaint about a new frame and is usually fixable at the source.

**Resize down, not up.** Full-resolution camera files take longer to load and display no better than a file matched to the screen. Resizing a batch to roughly the screen's pixel dimensions makes the frame noticeably more responsive.

**Curate.** A frame cycling through two hundred good photographs is far better than one cycling through two thousand including every near-duplicate. This is the single biggest improvement available and it costs nothing.

## Placement

Digital frames work best where there is no other screen and where the light is moderate. Direct sun washes the display out entirely, and a bright window behind the viewer turns any glossy screen into a mirror.

A side table, a hallway console or a kitchen shelf tends to work better than a living room where a television already dominates.

# Puzzle frames

Framing a puzzle is mostly a logistics problem. The image is fine, the frame is ordinary — the difficulty is moving a fragile object the size of a coffee table without it becoming a thousand separate objects again.

## Finished sizes by piece count

The first thing to understand is that piece count does not determine size. Manufacturers use different piece shapes and different aspect ratios, so two 1000-piece puzzles can differ by several inches.

Typical finished dimensions:

**Measure the assembled puzzle.** The box sometimes states the finished size and sometimes states it inaccurately. Measure it before buying anything.

## Choosing a frame

Puzzle dimensions almost never match a standard frame size, because puzzle manufacturers work to their own conventions.

That leaves two routes:

**Standard frame plus a custom mat.** Buy the nearest standard frame larger than the puzzle, and have a mat cut with an opening at the puzzle's exact dimensions. A 1000-piece puzzle at 19.25 x 26.6 goes into a 20x28 frame with a mat, or a 24x30 frame with a wider one. This is the sensible default: the mat costs a fraction of a custom frame and the result looks deliberate.

**Custom frame.** Correct for an unusual size or a very large puzzle, and several times the price.

The mat route also solves a genuine practical problem. Puzzle edges are never perfectly straight — the outer pieces bulge slightly — and a mat overlapping the perimeter by a quarter inch hides that entirely.

## Gluing

Gluing converts a fragile assembly into a single sheet. It makes everything afterwards straightforward, and it is what most people should do.

**What to use.** Purpose-made puzzle glue, or a PVA craft glue thinned slightly with water. Both dry clear. Avoid anything solvent-based, which can attack the printed surface.

**The process:**

1. Slide a sheet of wax paper or baking parchment under the puzzle before you start, so it does not glue itself to the table. Doing this with the puzzle already assembled requires patience and a helper.
2. Push the puzzle together firmly so all the gaps close.
3. Pour a small amount of glue onto the face and spread it thinly with a plastic spreader or an old card. Thin is important — too much glue soaks the card, swells it, and makes the surface uneven.
4. Work it into the seams and remove the excess.
5. Let it dry completely. This takes several hours, and longer in a humid room.
6. Turn the puzzle over — it will now hold together — and glue the back the same way. This second coat is what actually gives it rigidity.
7. Let it dry fully again, then weight it flat under books overnight to counteract any curl.

**Curling** is the common problem. Water-based glue on one side makes the card cup as it dries. Gluing both sides, and weighting the result while it dries, largely prevents it.

## Not gluing

An unglued puzzle can be framed, and some people prefer it because gluing is irreversible.

The method: slide a thin rigid sheet — hardboard, thick card or a sheet of foam board — underneath the assembled puzzle while supporting the leading edge so pieces do not fold over it. A second person helps enormously. Then transfer the whole thing to the frame's backing board, place the glazing over it, and assemble.

The puzzle is held by pressure between the backing and the glazing. It stays together as long as the frame stays upright and is not dropped. It cannot be laid face down, transported casually, or opened up later without starting again.

## Moving a glued puzzle

Even glued, a large puzzle is a floppy sheet of card and it will crease if it bends.

Support it fully. Slide it onto a rigid board that is at least as big as the puzzle, keep the board flat, and carry it horizontally. A 2000-piece puzzle is over three feet across and genuinely needs two people.

## The frame itself

**Depth.** A glued puzzle on a backing board is around a quarter of an inch thick. Add a mat and glazing and you want a rabbet of three eighths to half an inch. Many decorative frames are shallower than this, so check before buying.

**Glazing.** Worth having. Puzzle card is printed on ordinary stock that fades in light, and the slightly textured surface traps dust that cannot be cleaned off once it is there. Above about 20x28, use acrylic rather than glass — puzzle frames are already large and the weight adds up. The [glazing guide](/guides/picture-frame-glass) covers the choice in detail.

**Backing rigidity.** A large glued puzzle sags without support. Use hardboard or thick foam board, not corrugated card.

**Weight and hanging.** A framed 1000-piece puzzle with acrylic runs to five or six pounds; a 2000-piece one with glass can exceed fifteen. ## A note on value

Puzzle framing is often a first framing project, and it is a good one — the artwork is replaceable, the stakes are low, and the skills transfer directly.

It is also worth being honest about cost. Framing a puzzle properly, with a custom mat and decent glazing, frequently costs more than the puzzle did. That is fine if the puzzle means something — a first one completed together, a landmark 3000-piece — and worth thinking about if it does not.

## Storing a puzzle you have not framed yet

If the puzzle is assembled and the frame has not arrived, glue it and store it flat rather than leaving it on a table.

A glued puzzle stored flat between two sheets of card, under a modest weight, will keep indefinitely. Stored rolled or leaned against a wall, it curls and creases, and creases in puzzle card do not come out.

# How to make a picture frame

A picture frame is four mitred lengths of wood with a groove in the back. Everything difficult about making one comes down to two things: cutting four 45-degree angles that actually add up to 360, and gluing end grain to end grain in a way that holds.

## What you need

**Essential:**

- A mitre saw, or a mitre box and a fine-toothed backsaw
- A table saw or a router with a rabbeting bit
- A band clamp or strap clamp, or four corner clamps
- PVA wood glue
- A reliable square
- Sandpaper, 150 through 220 grit

**Very helpful:**

- A stop block for repeatable cuts
- A shooting board and a sharp block plane, for truing mitre faces
- A slot-cutting jig for splines

## Step 1: cut the rabbet first

Cut the rabbet along the entire length of your stock **before** cutting anything to length. Running a full-length piece through a saw or router is safer, more accurate, and gives a continuous groove with no chance of misalignment between rails.

On a table saw, two passes: one with the stock flat and the fence set to the rabbet width, one with the stock on edge and the fence set to the rabbet depth. The waste falls away on the second cut — make sure it falls to the outside of the blade, not trapped between blade and fence.

On a router table, a rabbeting bit with the right bearing does it in a single pass, though a deep rabbet is better taken in two or three shallow passes than one heavy one.

Size the rabbet for what will go inside: a quarter inch for glazing, print and backing; three eighths for a single mat; half an inch for a double mat or thicker glazing.

## Step 2: get the mitre angle genuinely right

Do not trust the 45-degree detent on a mitre saw. Most are close and few are exact, and a half-degree error at each of four corners becomes a two-degree gap by the time the frame closes.

The test: cut two scrap pieces at your saw's 45 setting, put them together, and check the resulting corner against a reliable square. If there is light at the outside, the angle is under 45; light at the inside means it is over. Adjust and re-test until the corner closes against the square with no light at all.

Do this once, then do not touch the saw setting until all four pieces are cut.

## Step 3: cut to length, in pairs

The two horizontal rails must be identical to each other, and the two verticals must be identical to each other. Identical, not approximately.

The reliable method is a **stop block**: clamp a block to the saw fence at the correct distance, butt each piece against it, cut. Two cuts against the same stop are the same length by construction, which is a far better guarantee than two measurements.

The length you need is the **inside** (rabbet) length, which equals the artwork size plus about an eighth of an inch of clearance. Measure and mark on the rabbet edge, not the face, because the face is longer by the moulding width at each end.

Cut the four pieces, then dry-assemble them and hold them together with the band clamp. Look at all four corners. If one is open, one rail is short — find it now rather than after gluing.

## Step 4: glue the joints properly

End grain drinks glue. A mitre joint is end grain against end grain, which is why a frame glued the way you would glue a face joint will come apart.

The technique that works:

1. Brush a thin coat of glue diluted about one part water to four parts glue onto each mitre face. This is **sizing** — it fills the open end grain rather than being absorbed away from the joint.
2. Wait five to ten minutes until it is tacky but not dry.
3. Apply full-strength glue to both faces.
4. Assemble and clamp.

A band clamp pulls all four corners simultaneously and self-squares if the pieces are cut accurately. Tighten in stages, checking the diagonals: measure corner to corner both ways, and when the two diagonals are equal, the frame is square. Adjust by nudging the long diagonal before the glue sets.

Leave it clamped for at least an hour, and do not stress the joints for 24.

## Step 5: reinforce the corners

Glue alone on end grain is not enough for anything you want to last. Three options, best first.

**Splines.** Cut a slot across each corner, on the outside face, running diagonally through the joint. Glue a thin strip of wood into the slot and trim it flush when dry. This puts long grain across the joint and is dramatically stronger than glue alone. In a contrasting timber it also becomes a visible detail that says the frame was made rather than bought.

**V-nails.** Wedge-shaped fasteners driven into the back of the joint. This is the professional method and needs an underpinner, which is a real machine. Some can be driven by hand with a special tool for light frames.

**Corrugated fasteners.** Hammered across the joint at the back. Fast, effective, and visibly crude. Fine for a shop frame, wrong for anything else.

## Step 6: sand and finish

Sand progressively — 150, then 180, then 220 — always with the grain, and pay attention to the corners, where a mitre almost never meets perfectly flush. Sand the corners as a single surface rather than each rail separately.

For **painted** frames, finish after assembly: fill any hairline corner gaps with a fine filler, prime, sand lightly, then two thin coats of paint. Thin coats sprayed or brushed out well beat one thick coat every time.

For **oiled hardwood**, finish before assembly is often easier, because getting an even oil finish into a tight inside corner is awkward. Mask the mitre faces so glue still has bare wood to bond to.

For **stained** work, apply a wood conditioner first on anything blotch-prone — maple, pine, birch — and test the stain on an offcut from the same board. Stain on a test piece from a different board tells you nothing useful.

## Step 7: fit the hardware

Cut the glazing and backing about a sixteenth of an inch under the rabbet size so they drop in without forcing.

Hold everything in with **flexible points** driven into the rabbet wall with a point driver, or with small brads tapped in carefully. Then seal the back with gummed paper tape across the join between backing and frame — it keeps dust and insects out and makes the back look finished.

For hanging, fit **D-rings** about a third of the way down from the top on each side and run picture wire between them with a few inches of slack. Sawtooth hangers are quicker and cannot be levelled. ## The mistakes that cost the most time

**Cutting to the face length instead of the rabbet length.** The frame comes out too big by twice the moulding width, and there is no fix.

**Measuring each rail individually.** Two rails measured separately are never quite the same. Use a stop block.

**Skipping the glue sizing.** The joint feels fine when clamped and opens within a year.

**Finishing before filling.** Corner gaps filled after finishing show as a different colour forever.

**Clamping a frame that was never square.** A band clamp will happily hold a parallelogram. Check the diagonals every time.

# How to frame a picture

Framing at home is not difficult. It is a sequence, and doing it in the right order — with clean hands and a clean surface — produces a result indistinguishable from a shop's for most work.

## What you need

- The frame, with its glazing and backing
- A mat, if you are using one
- Photo corners or archival hinging tape
- A microfibre cloth and glazing cleaner
- A soft clean surface to work on — a towel or a sheet of foam board
- Cotton gloves, if the artwork is valuable
- Gummed paper tape for sealing the back

Set up somewhere with as little dust in the air as possible. Not a workshop, not immediately after vacuuming.

## Step 1: open the frame

Lay the frame face down on the soft surface.

Ready-made frames close in one of three ways. **Flexible metal points** driven into the rabbet, which bend outward with a fingernail or a flat screwdriver. **Turn buttons**, which rotate ninety degrees. **Stapled hardboard**, on the cheapest frames, which has to be prised out and cannot be reused neatly.

Lift the backing board out, then the mat if there is one, then the glazing. Keep everything in order and the right way up — the mat has a front and a back, and its bevel only looks right one way round.

## Step 2: clean the glazing

Do this properly because it is the one thing you cannot fix later without dismantling everything.

**Spray the cloth, never the glazing.** Liquid sprayed at a sheet held in a frame runs into the rabbet and onto the mat.

**For glass:** a microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water handles most of it; a drop of isopropyl alcohol deals with fingerprints. Clean both faces.

**For acrylic:** use a dedicated plastic cleaner or plain water. Never use ammonia-based glass cleaner, which crazes acrylic permanently. Remove the protective film from both sides only at this point, and expect the acrylic to attract dust electrostatically — an anti-static cleaner is worth having.

Hold the sheet up to a light at an angle to check for smears before you go further.

## Step 3: mount the artwork

The artwork attaches to the **backing board**, not to the mat and not to the glazing.

**Photo corners** are the simplest method and the safest. Four small transparent or archival pockets stuck to the backing board, into which the artwork's corners slide. No adhesive ever touches the artwork, and the whole thing is completely reversible.

**Hinging** is the method for artwork that will show its own edges, or that is too large for corners to hold. Two small hinges of archival tissue or hinging tape are attached to the **top edge only**, so the artwork hangs from the top and is free to expand and contract with humidity.

The rule that matters: **never attach all four edges.** Paper moves with humidity. Fixed on all sides, it has nowhere to go and buckles — the ripple you see in badly framed prints is almost always this.

Things never to use: ordinary sticky tape, masking tape, glue stick, spray adhesive, or dry mounting on anything with any value. All of them yellow, harden, and stain through the paper within a few years.

## Step 4: position it squarely

Place the mat over the artwork and look at the borders on all four sides.

Measure them. Do not judge by eye — an eighth of an inch of misalignment is clearly visible in the finished frame and completely invisible while you are looking down at it on a table.

Adjust the artwork until the borders are even, or until they match the deliberate weighting if the mat is bottom-weighted. Then secure the corners or hinges properly.

If the mat opening itself is off-centre — which happens with cheap ready-made mats — centre the **artwork within the opening** rather than within the mat, and accept the mat's error. The eye reads the relationship between image and opening far more strongly than the relationship between opening and frame.

## Step 5: assemble in order

Front to back:

1. **Glazing**
2. **Mat** (or spacers, if no mat)
3. **Artwork**, attached to the backing board
4. **Backing board**
5. **Optional dust cover** of thin card

If you are not using a mat, add clear **spacers** — thin plastic strips that sit in the rabbet and hold the glazing a fraction of an inch off the artwork. Paper pressed directly against glazing will eventually bond to it in humid conditions, and separating them without damage is a conservation job.

Before closing, hold the assembled stack up to the light and check for dust or hairs between the glazing and the artwork. A small rubber bulb blower removes them without contact. This is the last moment it is easy.

## Step 6: close and secure

Fit the retaining points or turn buttons. Points should press the stack firmly enough that nothing rattles, and not so hard that the backing bows.

If the frame originally had stapled hardboard, replace it with flexible points — they are sold cheaply, they fit any frame, and they make the frame openable in future.

## Step 7: seal the back

Run gummed paper tape or acid-free framing tape around the join between the backing board and the frame, covering the gap completely.

This is not cosmetic. The seal keeps dust and, more importantly, insects out — silverfish will eat paper inside an unsealed frame and you will not know until you open it. It also stabilises the internal humidity.

## Step 8: fit the hanging hardware

D-rings a third of the way down from the top on each side, wire between them with a couple of inches of slack. Felt bumpers on the bottom rear corners.

## The mistakes that cause the most regret

**Taping all four edges.** Causes buckling within months.

**Ordinary tape on artwork.** Yellows, hardens, and stains through.

**Artwork touching glazing.** Bonds permanently in humid conditions.

**Trimming artwork to fit.** Irreversible, and the cut edge always shows.

**Positioning by eye.** Measure the borders. Always.

**Not sealing the back.** Dust and insects, both entirely preventable.

# How to hang a picture frame

Hanging is the step where careful framing gets undone. A well-made frame on an inadequate fixing is a repair job waiting to happen, and a perfectly good frame hung two inches too high looks wrong for as long as it stays there.

## The height rule

**Centre of the image at 57 to 60 inches from the floor.**

This is standard gallery practice and it is consistently lower than untrained instinct. Most people hang pictures at around 65 inches, which puts them above comfortable eye level for a seated viewer and makes rooms feel top-heavy.

To find the nail position from that rule:

1. Measure the frame height. Halve it. Add 58 (or your chosen centre height). This is the height of the **top of the frame** above the floor.
2. Measure from the top of the frame down to the taut hanging point — pull the wire up until it is tight and measure to that point, or measure to the top of the D-ring.
3. Subtract that second measurement from the first. That is where the fixing goes.

Worked example, a 16x20 frame in a 1-inch moulding (18 inches tall overall) with a wire that pulls up to 3 inches below the top edge:

- Half of 18 is 9; 9 + 58 = 67 inches to the top of the frame
- 67 − 3 = **64 inches to the fixing**

## Height with furniture

Above a sofa, sideboard or headboard, the relationship to the furniture overrides the general rule.

- **6 to 10 inches** of clear wall between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame. Less crowds it; more breaks the visual connection.
- The artwork should span roughly **two thirds to three quarters** of the furniture's width. A small frame over a wide sofa looks marooned.
- Over a bed, hang higher than you think and use acrylic glazing. Nothing heavy and nothing breakable above a sleeping person.

## Fixings, by what they actually hold

Two habits worth adopting:

**Rate for three times the weight.** Fixings in drywall do not fail cleanly at their rated load; the board crumbles progressively around them over months. A 20-pound frame wants 60 pounds of rated capacity.

**Use two fixings above 16x20.** Not only for load. A single fixing allows the frame to rotate, and you will re-level it every time a door slams. Two fixings, spaced about a third of the frame width either side of centre, hold it square permanently.

## Wall types

**Drywall** is the common case. Anchors work well; nails do not. Locate studs with a stud finder — they are usually at 16 or 24 inch centres — and use one where you can.

**Plaster over lath** cracks under hammering. Drill instead: a small pilot hole with a masonry bit at low speed, then an anchor suited to what is behind the plaster. Putting a strip of tape over the spot before drilling reduces surface chipping.

**Brick or concrete** needs a masonry bit and a plastic or sleeve anchor. Drill into the mortar joint rather than the brick face where you can — it is easier to drill and far easier to make good later.

**Tile** needs a diamond or carbide bit, low speed, no hammer action, and tape over the drilling point to stop the bit wandering. Aim for grout lines.

## Hardware on the frame

**Wire between two D-rings** is the standard for most frames. Fit the D-rings about a third of the way down from the top on each side, and leave the wire slack enough that it pulls up to roughly 2 to 4 inches below the top edge when taut. Too tight and the frame tips forward; too loose and the wire shows above the frame.

**D-rings hooked directly onto two wall fixings** is stronger and more stable, and it is what you should use for heavy pieces. The trade-off is that the frame position is fixed by the fixings, so measuring has to be right first time.

**Sawtooth hangers** are quick, allow no levelling, and concentrate the whole load on one small point. Acceptable up to about 11x14; replace them above that.

**A French cleat** — two interlocking bevelled rails, one on the wall and one on the frame — is the correct answer for anything very heavy. The load spreads along the entire rail, the piece cannot be knocked off, and it self-levels if the wall rail is level.

## Getting it level and keeping it there

Use a spirit level on the top edge of the frame, not on the wire. Wires stretch and settle.

Then fit **felt or rubber bumpers** to the bottom two rear corners. They do three things: hold the frame parallel to the wall so it does not tip forward, provide friction that stops it drifting out of level, and allow air behind the frame, which matters in damp rooms.

Bumpers cost almost nothing and are the difference between a frame that stays straight and one you adjust every fortnight.

## Multiple frames

For two or more frames, the discipline is spacing.

- **Two to three inches** between frame edges, identical throughout the arrangement.
- Measure it; do not judge it by eye. Vertical gaps consistently look larger than horizontal ones of the same size, so measuring corrects an illusion.
- For a group, plan on paper first: cut templates the size of each frame, mark the hanging point on each, tape them to the wall and rearrange until it works. Drill through the paper. The [gallery wall guide](/guides/gallery-wall-frames) covers layouts in detail.

## Staircases

Do not level a staircase arrangement to the floor. Follow the stair angle.

Establish an imaginary line parallel to the stair nosings, then keep a constant perpendicular distance from that line to the centre of each frame. The frames themselves stay level; their centres climb at the same rate as the stairs. Anything else — levelling them in a row, or stepping them irregularly — reads as an error.

Nearly every framing mistake traces back to answering this question in the wrong order. People choose a frame, then discover what it will and will not hold. The order that works is: measure, decide about matting, then buy.

## Step 1: measure the artwork

Use a ruler, not the description it came with. Print sizes drift: a poster sold as 24x36 may measure 23.75 x 35.75, and an art print sold as A3 may have a deckle edge that makes "the size" ambiguous.

Measure both dimensions at two points each — top and bottom, left and right. Paper is not always cut square. If the two measurements differ, record the **smaller** one, because that is what has to fit.

Note anything that changes the mounting: an embossed seal near an edge, a deckle you want to show, a signature in the bottom margin you must not cover.

## Step 2: decide about the mat

This is the actual decision, and it determines the frame size.

**Mat it if:** the artwork is on paper, it has a signature or margin worth showing, it is going on a wall rather than a desk, or you want it to look considered rather than merely hung. Paper artwork should also be matted for a practical reason — the mat holds it off the glazing, which prevents it sticking in humid conditions.

**Skip the mat if:** it is a canvas, a poster meant to read edge to edge, a photograph where the composition runs to the border, or the frame is small enough that a border would swallow it.

## Step 3: read the size off the table

The standard-border column adds roughly four inches to each dimension; the generous column adds six or more. Both columns are chosen to land on frame sizes that actually exist, which is why some of the arithmetic is slightly uneven.

## Step 4: check the shape, not just the size

A frame the right size can still be the wrong shape. This catches people constantly with camera photographs.

A file straight from most cameras is 3:2. The two most commonly stocked frame sizes in the US — 8x10 and 16x20 — are 4:5. Printed to fill an 8x10, a 3:2 photo loses about a fifth of its long edge.

The families worth knowing:

- **3:2** — 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36
- **4:5** — 8x10, 16x20, 24x30
- **3:4** — 9x12, 12x16, 18x24, 30x40
- **1:1** — 4x4, 8x8, 12x12, 20x20
- **√2:1** — A5, A4, A3, A2, A1

## Step 5: check the wall, not just the frame

The frame size is the artwork opening. The wall gives up the **outside** dimension, which is the frame size plus twice the moulding width.

For a group of frames, add two to three inches of gap between each one on top of those figures.

## When the artwork is a non-standard size

Sooner or later you will have something that is 13.5 x 19, or A3, or a deckle-edged sheet of no fixed size at all. Three routes, cheapest first.

**A standard frame with a custom mat.** Buy the next standard frame up and have a mat cut to your exact opening. A custom mat costs perhaps fifteen to forty dollars, arrives in a few days, and looks entirely intentional. This is almost always the right answer.

**A float mount.** Mount the artwork on a backing board slightly smaller than the frame opening, with the artwork's own edges visible and a shadow gap around it. Standard frame, no mat cutting, and it makes a virtue of a deckle edge.

**A custom frame.** Three to five times the price of a standard one. Correct for a genuinely important piece, excessive for most things.

The one route to avoid is trimming the artwork to fit the frame. It is irreversible, it destroys collectible value, and the cut edge always shows.

## Common print sizes and their frames, at a glance

## Buying for a size you do not have yet

If you are commissioning a print, ordering an enlargement, or choosing what to have made, work backwards: pick the frame size first and print to it.

That inverts the usual order for good reason. Frames are manufactured in a fixed set of sizes; prints can be made at any size at all. Choosing a print size that matches a standard frame costs nothing and saves the entire problem.

The sizes worth printing to, because frames for them are available anywhere: 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 18x24 and 24x36. Add 12x18 and 20x30 if you are ordering the frame online anyway and want an uncropped 3:2 photograph.

# Aspect ratio and frame sizes

Two frames can be the same size and the wrong shape. That sentence explains most of the disappointment in home framing, and once you understand aspect ratio the problem essentially stops happening.

## What an aspect ratio is

An aspect ratio is width divided by height, reduced to the smallest sensible numbers. It describes **shape only** — it says nothing about how big something is.

A 6x4 inch print, a 30x20 inch poster and a 6000x4000 pixel file are all 3:2. They are wildly different in size and identical in shape, which means the same image fills any of them perfectly.

Two images with different ratios can never both fill the same frame. One of them has to be cropped, bordered, or distorted. There is no fourth option, and "distorted" is never the answer.

## Where the common ratios come from

**3:2** is the shape of a 35mm film frame — 36mm by 24mm. Digital sensors in interchangeable-lens cameras copied it, so essentially every DSLR and mirrorless camera in the world produces 3:2 files.

**4:3** came from early television and from the 4/3-inch sensor format, and it is what most phone cameras produce by default.

**4:5** is the shape of large-format sheet film — 4x5 inches, and 8x10 inches. American portrait studios worked in that format for a century, which is why 8x10 and 16x20 are the dominant US print sizes despite matching no camera in current production.

**√2:1** is the A-series, defined so that halving a sheet preserves the ratio. It is used almost everywhere except North America.

**16:9** is a video and display shape. It exists in print essentially only as a deliberate crop.

Frame sizes are the sediment of these separate histories, which is precisely why they do not form a coherent system.

## The ratio families

Two things stand out. The 3:2 family is the largest and the most useful for photography. And 11x14 — one of the most stocked frames in existence — belongs to no family at all.

## What cropping actually costs

Filling a frame whose ratio differs from the image means removing a strip from the long edge. The amount is not always small.

Seventeen percent of the width of a portrait is roughly an arm. Thirty percent of a 16:9 landscape is most of the reason it was shot in 16:9. These are not rounding errors, and a print lab set to "fill" will apply them without telling you.

## The three honest solutions

**Print to a matching size.** The cleanest answer. Pick the frame from your file's own ratio family and nothing is lost. This is what the [aspect ratio calculator](/tools/aspect-ratio-calculator) is for — enter your dimensions and it lists every standard frame within 2% of your shape.

**Crop deliberately.** If you must crop, do it yourself, looking at the image, rather than letting an algorithm centre-crop it. You will make a better decision about which arm to lose than the lab will.

**Mat the difference.** Print at "fit" so the whole image lands with borders, then cover the borders with a mat cut to the image's real ratio. The mat opening follows the artwork; the frame does not have to. This is the technique that lets a 16:9 panorama live inside a perfectly ordinary 16x20 frame, and it is why professional framing rarely worries about ratio mismatch at all.

## Resolution is a separate question

Aspect ratio tells you whether the image fits. Resolution tells you whether it will look good doing so.

For photographic quality, aim for 300 pixels per inch: a 16x20 print wants 4800 x 6000 pixels, which is 28.8 megapixels. Very few cameras deliver that at the long end of a print run.

In practice, viewing distance rescues you. A large print is looked at from further away, and 150 DPI is entirely acceptable for anything 20 inches or more on the long edge viewed from a normal distance across a room. That halves the pixel requirement, and a 24-megapixel camera comfortably produces a 24x36 poster on that basis.

The rule that fails is upscaling. Software that invents pixels can make a file the right size; it cannot add detail that was never captured. A 1200 x 800 image printed at 24x36 looks exactly as soft as it is, regardless of what the file's dimensions claim.

## Working it out for a specific print

1. Get the file's pixel dimensions, or the print's inch dimensions.
2. Divide the larger by the smaller — that is your decimal ratio.
3. Find the family it belongs to in the table above.
4. Choose any frame from that family that suits the wall.
5. If nothing matches, mat it rather than crop it.

## Cropping deliberately

If the ratios do not match and you have decided to crop, do it yourself rather than letting a print service centre-crop for you.

Open the file, set the crop tool to the frame's ratio, and move the crop box around before committing. Two things to check: that nothing important sits within about a quarter inch of the new edge, since the frame's rabbet will overlap that much again; and that the composition still works, because removing 17% of a frame's width often removes the balance the photograph depended on.

For portraits specifically, watch the space above the head. A 3:2 portrait cropped to 4:5 usually loses width, and the instinct to keep faces centred can push the crop into hands and elbows at the edges.

## When the mismatch is the point

Occasionally a ratio mismatch is worth keeping rather than solving. A panoramic image floated inside a conventional frame, with a wide mat above and below, reads as deliberate and often better than either cropping or a custom panoramic frame.

Frames are sold by five quite different kinds of business, and the price for the same object varies by a factor of ten between them. Knowing which one to use for which job is most of the skill.

## The options, compared

## General retail

Supermarkets, homeware chains, discount stores. They stock 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 18x24 and 24x36, and essentially nothing else.

**What they are for:** you need a common size today, and cost matters more than anything else.

**What to check:** these frames vary enormously at similar prices. Glazing is frequently styrene rather than glass or acrylic — thin, wavy, scratches immediately and yellows within a few years. Backing is often flimsy card that lets the print bow. Corners are sometimes simply stapled.

A good general-retail frame exists; you have to look at it rather than at its price.

## Craft stores

Wider range, including some non-standard sizes, plus ready-made mats, matboard, and often a mat-cutting service.

Their defining characteristic is aggressive and near-continuous discounting. Frames are frequently listed at a price nobody pays. Buying at full price in a craft store is essentially a choice, and waiting a week or two is usually rewarded.

**What they are good at:** buying a frame and a matching mat in one trip, and having a custom mat cut without going to a framing shop.

## Online frame retailers

This is where the actual range is. Every standard size, many non-standard sizes, a genuine choice of mouldings and finishes, and custom sizing at prices well below a full framing service.

**Advantages:** selection that no physical shop can match; custom mats ordered to exact dimensions; better mouldings than general retail at similar prices; the odd sizes — 9x12, 12x16, 12x18, 20x28 — that nobody stocks.

**Disadvantages:** you cannot judge a finish from a photograph, colours differ from screen to delivery, and large frames carry oversize shipping charges that can rival the frame's price. Glass is rarely shipped; acrylic is the norm.

**Practical tip:** for anything where the finish matters, order one before ordering six.

## Framing shops

Full service: any size, any moulding, custom mats, conservation glazing, and someone who knows what they are doing mounting the artwork.

**Why it costs what it does.** Custom framing is priced as labour, not materials. Cutting and joining a moulding, cutting a mat with a clean bevel, cutting glazing, hinging artwork correctly and fitting the whole thing is an hour or more of skilled work per piece. The materials are bought in small quantities at retail-adjacent prices. There is no hidden margin; it is genuinely that much work.

**When it is worth it:** original artwork, anything of real sentimental value, odd sizes where no standard frame comes close, and conservation framing where the glazing and mounting materially affect how long the piece survives.

**When it is not:** reproduction posters, prints you will replace, and anything where a standard frame and a custom mat would get you 90% of the result.

**The middle option people miss:** many framing shops will sell a **chop** — four cut and mitred lengths of your chosen moulding — or a **join**, the assembled empty frame. Either costs a fraction of full service and leaves you to fit the contents. If you are comfortable assembling a frame, ask about this; it is rarely advertised.

## Secondhand

Thrift stores, charity shops, estate sales, flea markets and online marketplaces.

Old frames are frequently better made than cheap modern ones. Solid wood rather than MDF, real glass, proper joints. A frame bought for the price of a coffee can be worth stripping for its glass alone.

**What to check before buying:**

- **Woodworm.** Small round exit holes, and fine dust beneath. Do not bring it into a house with other wooden furniture.
- **Corner joints.** Press the frame diagonally. Movement means the joints have failed and will need re-gluing.
- **Cracked glazing.** Cheap to replace, but factor it in.
- **Warping.** Sight along each rail. A twisted frame will never sit flat against a wall.
- **The finish.** If it might be a genuine antique, do not strip it — see [vintage and antique frames](/guides/vintage-and-antique-frames) before doing anything irreversible.

## What things actually cost, relatively

Rather than figures that date, here is the ratio between the options for the same 16x20 piece:

The interesting row is the third. A custom-cut mat inside an inexpensive standard frame is the single highest-value framing purchase available — it accounts for most of what makes a framed piece look professional, and it costs a small fraction of full service.

## A working strategy

1. **Standard size, ordinary artwork:** general retail or craft store frame, with a ready-made mat.
2. **Standard size, artwork you care about:** decent frame plus a custom-cut mat and better glazing.
3. **Odd size:** nearest standard frame up, plus a custom mat cut to the artwork. See [what size frame do I need](/guides/what-size-frame-do-i-need).
4. **Original artwork, or anything irreplaceable:** framing shop, conservation materials, and let them mount it.
5. **Building a gallery wall:** buy all the frames in one order from one source so the finishes match.

## Questions worth asking a framer

If you do use a framing shop, a few questions materially change what you get and what you pay.

- **Can I supply my own frame or moulding?** Many will, and it separates the cost of the frame from the cost of the work.
- **Do you sell a chop or a join?** Cheaper than full service if you can fit the contents yourself.
- **Is the mat board acid-free?** It should be, and on cheap jobs it sometimes is not.
- **What is the glazing?** Plain, UV or anti-reflective, and glass or acrylic. This is where the price differences hide.
- **How is the artwork being mounted?** Hinged with archival tape or photo corners, not glued or dry-mounted, unless you have agreed otherwise.
